"With ELD it will take few days more"
It shouldn't take a few more days, unless the ELD is illegally restricting us.
I guess that is the question. We do everything on the up and up with the paper logs, because HOS rules are longer in Canada and Alaska. I don't want to be restricted by lower 48 rules when I can legally run longer in the north.

Since you'll be running in Canada, you'll be able to just run paper in Canada until they also pass an ELD law.....
stacks Thanks this. -
Good. More money for me.

When I was on Elogs as soon as I crossed the Canada border I could select Canadian HOS. There was also an Arctic Circle option as well. Mine didn't have Alaska HOS though but I can't imagine it would be too hard for the software to be upgraded to accomodate that as well.

Yes, electronic logs have all available HOS (not necessarily all electronic logs have all available HOS, but you get what I'm saying), you just need to confirm with the manufacturer. The ones I used automatically changed when you crossed a border--that could make your logs look interesting along the Alaska Highway where it crosses back and forth between BC and YT. That could potentially be a (minor) problem depending on how close to your end-of-day and how you're used to logging. Other models may require the driver to switch.
Yes, you could still log your stops as you were previously doing on paper. Depending on the electronic log model, it might require some more forethought than you might have been doing previously, but on many models you can edit non-driving hours.Last edited: Mar 5, 2016
Tim D. Thanks this. -
Why?

Canada are also bringing in ELD devices most of the big companies especially that cross the border are already using them .
-
I actually used mine just to see how accurate it is and withing a min or two it was spot on with the qualcom system in my truck.

so, is this E log stuff definitely going to happen or is there still a chance it will be struck down? Just wanting to know how soon I need to start looking for a new job or an older truck.
-
Well, until it is struck down or rescinded by the legislature, it is in the regulation stream and be required by the end of 2017. And speculating as to whether is gets struck down or rescinded is a mind game that is a waste of time. Better to prepare for the worse and be ready than burying one's head in the sand and hope it all goes away. So, yeah, one is going to have to make decisions on what they want to do to deal with this. Not advocating, just stating the facts as we know them.
Straight Stacks, LindaPV and gunner76 Thank this.
