As for the truck, they make the lease operator buy physical damage insurance and non-trucking (i.e. "bobtail") insurance as a condition of their lease. What Swift covers themselves is the insurance for the trailer, the insurance for the cargo, and the trucking liability insurance.
I can just imagine the call to dispatch. I have bad news and I have worse news. What's that? What's the worse news? Um... the other truck was a Swift.RedRover, darthanubis, White_Knuckle_Newbie and 1 other person Thank this. -
There's no liability limiter except in your imagination . The driver of the second truck will have his lease contract on the truck and his lease contract with Swift terminated . A rear end crash with any carrier is a job and career ender with any carrier due to the insurance companies refusing coverage for proven unsafe drivers . Before anyone gets too deep into Swift or any self insured company absorbing the loss you should research reinsurance .
As far as the rest of your comment I assume you're speaking of your own failure as a Swift owner operator who actually owned your truck outright . My break even is about 1100 miles and at 2000 miles my NET is about $1000 but my average weekly miles are 2700. And I've never needed any kind of advance .
And in about a year I will have clear title to a truck that I will have paid $15000 less than if I had walked into a dealer with a wad of cash in 2011.RedRover, darthanubis, THE ROAD VIRUS and 1 other person Thank this. -
Most truck company have the legal disclaimer in their leases about your cost in an accident. Not sure how Swift has theirs worded, but here goes the major carriers.
Yes you might have to pay the 1000.00 deductible..
your thinking cool this will only cost me a Grand..
But here's the catch.. Truck damage, 1k / trailer damage another 1k / cargo damage another 1k other truck damage 1k.. So now your looking at mim. 4000.00 in out of pocket damage claims.
Now one other person did state you could get extra insurance I believe to help lower your costs.
But you get the jest how much this will be costing the person driving the last truck if they are leasing or own that trk. now if company driver the costs are very little if any for their mess up...
Yea they will be un employed, but they walk away cost free which I think is wrong..
Break out the speed dial for the lawyers....Toomanybikes and scottied67 Thank this. -
Umm, it is Bud Light... does that qualify as actual beer?blairandgretchen, White_Knuckle_Newbie, Swedish Chef and 3 others Thank this.

This is actually an advanced technique borrowed from Ice Road Truckers. You will recall that episode where Lisa was pushing that other truck and trailer back to the yard after it broke down. This is the same thing to save Siwft some money on towing costs. Looks like the front truck lost all his air thereby causing his brakes to lock up, unfortunately and this freak accident happened.blairandgretchen and santanzchild Thank this.
