Steer tires on the drive axle won't hurt anything. I have 4 steer tires on the drives right now. Was walking around Rush Peterbilt Albu, they had 5 brand new Petes ready to go to a customer, all 10 tires on each truck was Bridgestone steer tires all around.

If you are running on good dry pavement at normal weights a steer tire is ample for traction and has lower rolling resistance so can be beneficial to fuel milage.
A drive axle tire in fact does not work as hard as a steer so some put the steers on a drive axle for a few thousand miles to work them in a bit before fitting them to the steers.
Many don't know this but if you break a steer in like this it can last longer and wear better.

Recaps today are not yesterdays recaps. I have hired driving school graduates before and get a chuckle out of being told I can't run recaps up front. My reply is always the same. I simply ask them to get the little green book out of their truck and show me where it says that in the book. When we see that it is only for buses they shut up.
It is cheap insurance buying virgins for steers as hoods and fenders are #### expensive.

Thank you. Even if it was legal on a class 8 rig I would never do it.

I would run steer rubber on the drive(s) if it was a pavement-only truck and rarely saw winter driving conditions. Like if it was hauling hay in CA or something.

    Dominick253 Thanks this.

I run XZA3's all around running US and Canada, not an issue. Especially ice, they're excellent.

    Dominick253 and TGUNKEL Thank this.

Actually the 50% tire will wear out faster because it is slightly smaller in diameter therefore it is going to rotate slightly faster than the bigger tire beside it.

Oh the agony of truck stop rumors. Unless you are driving a passenger carrying vehicle it is legal to run caps on the steers. Personally I would not do it. If I absolutely had to then it would only be with MY casings and not one that was already capped from the store. Since we run a lot more trailers than trucks we tend to take the drives and steers off early and use them on the trailers to run them out.

    Dominick253 and DL550CAT Thank this.
