What engine u got? Pre emissions? It could be just soot...
77fib77 Thanks this. -
Let's see,,
Many things come into play.
-Could be a bad turbo or turbo actuator.
-Could be a bad egr valve not closing.
-Could be a serious boost leak in the charge air system .
- If the engine is mechanically injected it could be bad something in the injection pump not set up correctly.
- Bad injector or injectors.
- plugged air filters.
You get my point, that's just the short list. .........
Start off with what kind of truck , year , engine and maybe some one can narrow it down for you.77fib77 Thanks this. -

Fuel to air ratio is off during combustion.
There's a balance to be maintained for peak efficiency. The injectors spray fuel and the turbo pushes air in relation to one another to maintain this efficiency.
When you get black smoke your injectors are spraying more fuel and you're not getting enough air (oxygen) to burn it all completely.
In other words you're running rich.77fib77 Thanks this. -
Start off with the easiest thing first guys. When was the air cleaners last changed.
baha Thanks this. -
If it's a mechanical engine, could just be the driver putting his foot down too hard for the load and conditions.

if mixture is a bit reach - it is not so bad as lean mixture.
If u can see some smoke - keep it on road, but if smoke is really dark and it is a lot of black clouds - mixture is too reach -
It's an isx 870 04 9200i. Egr is blocked off. The turbo doesn't get above 20 si, most of the time around 14psi. If I'm light on throttle no smoke.

sounds like boost leak to me
CasanovaCruiser and 77fib77 Thank this.
