I was watching world news tonight and they said California and New York have signed today to have the minimum wage go up to $15.00 per hour. They expect this to sweep the nation with lots of other states jumping on board. What's sad is if you look on Craigslist you see all day long Trucking jobs listed at $16-$18 bucks an hour. Ceva has a locomotive fuel hauler position listed at $14 to start... Who in their right mind would take that position for that pay?

I saw this too. This is a slap to the face to every college grad, to skilled trade, or certified trade jobs.

Not just us truckers, but police officers who makes $15 a hour, nurses, even our arm forces. College grad barely can get the job they went to school for, and entry level like them barely even break 20 a hour.

So why would a unskilled job like that make $15 a hour and be equal pay to a police officer, nurses and fireman.

This $15 an hour crap is going to screw the economy up so bad. The cost of everything is going to go through the roof. Hope all other workers in all other fields get a raise accordingly.

Business owners are not going to absorb the costs and not likely to pass much of it to their customers. But they will terminate employees. Lots of them. A massive amount of them.

The whole reason I got back into trucking was because after completing a 4 year IT degree with my main focus in security and management,.. $80k in Sally Mae loans later (Which I am still paying on to this day) the best job I found were between $10 - $12 hr tech support for companies like AT&T, Bank Of America, Level-3, ComCast and a few others. The promise of $80k starting salaries were lies and empty faith similar to how they entice rookie CDL drivers to come work for the mega's.

I was making $22hr in 2008 and my wife had a $62k salary with full benefits as a detective. I understand $15hr will be min wage,.. but its still not enough to afford housing, raise kids (Properly) and live like a middle class American should. People will still only find part time work with no benefits,.. still need to work 2 - 3 part time jobs just to survive.

Thats the cold hard reality that America has become. Its easier for lazy kids to get knocked up and jump on the Obama plan.

Where have you been living? Everything has already shot up 200% in just the last 4 years.

When America was struggling with unemployment and high fuel prices,.. companies only offered part time work and raised retail prices. 6 yrs later nothing has changed,.. prices still climbing. You can not leave the grocery store with a few basic needs and not spend $75 - $100 for basically nothing. Its nothing to fill a cart and spend $300+. So how can someone making $15hr (Basically taking home $475 a week take home if he gets 40hrs a week) afford $200 - $300 a week to feed his family and still pay for housing, electric, phone, gas, car, medical insurance etc??

Alberta's doing the same thing. I had an argument with someone who was in favour of it.
Basically his argument was: "Well, you're skilled labour so you can afford to pay an extra dollar for your coffee in the morning."
My response: "Sure I can afford to pay an extra dollar for my coffee, the question is can you? Along with the higher cost to purchase EVERYTHING else?"

Fair wage, Living wage, $15 minimum wage. What a joke. When are these politicians going to stop giving away the money I work to pay taxes.
Where do these low skilled people expect to get experience and move up the ladder. Working fastfood and restaurant and entry level help was never suppose to provide a person with a living wage.
A living wage is what you earn when you climb up the ladder of life with experience.
If you stay at your entry level job while getting a wife/spouse a couple children is your fault for being stupid. Not a reason for me to support your lazy raspberry. Many people have completed degrees while working part/full time.
They think jobs left the US before, What do they expect now.
    Good Luck America.

@xsetra That's the problem with kids today. They look at what middle-aged folks own and feel like they should be entitled to that as well while sitting on their ### doing nothing. These kids need to look at it as a goal to achieve. Work hard and success will follow.

There's ALWAYS going to be low income, middle income, and high incomer classes. No matter what the minimum wage is, nothing is going to change societal rules that have existed since man worked for wages or as a slave. Just shifts things around a bit in the short term, and speeds up inflation rates to compensate. You may see a short term boost in additional money in the economy, but within 9 months you will lose that, plus more in terms of inflation and some loss of status and position for those in the middle. Those making $20/hr today for example? They just received a pay cut, both on the wages side in comparison to entry-level, and will soon find their dollar buys less then projected because inflation kicks into a higher gear.

You could raise the minimum wage to $100/hr and there would still be that same segment of society saying it's not enough to live on. Only question is how long it takes for the laws of economics and society to regain it's equilibrium.
