Hello, I started HACC, and I LOVE it! ABF is coming to talk to the class today, and Old Dominion is coming Thursday. I understand ABF is union with company-paid benefits. I understand ABF has a higher pay rate. I understand Old Dominion has a pay rate just shy of ABF. I understand Old Dominion's line haul job is AWESOME. Which one would you choose and why, ABF or Old Dominion? (I know there is an older post of this nature. I'm looking for current info.) Thank you!

It depends on LOCATION...LOCATION...LOCATION. The closer you are to a major city, the steadier the work, the futher away, less steady. And having LTL companies recruiting at schools obviously means their desperate for drivers, and it may be an indication of a high turnover rate.

And by the way, I thought you were teaming with your sister?

I'd go with Old Dominion. They have better equipment and none of that union crap.

Are you interested in linehaul, or P&D?

Your probably gonna start off on the docks first, so I hope you've driven a forklift before.

Depends on the individual situation, both companies are excellent choices for a CAREER opportunity. If you were able to suck it up on the extra board for a while, ABF would be the choice. Marginally higher wages with FREE insurance = greater take home pay, not to mention the pension, although some will question it's solvency.

A good childhood friend of mine got in to Old Dominion 12 or 14 years ago and holds a linehaul bid that grosses over 90k per year. He also says the company leaves him alone to do his job, you can't put a price on that in my opinion. He does pay for his insurance (maybe $80-90/week, I can't remember his exact figure) and he's gets some sort of matching 401(k).

I personally don't think you could go wrong with either.

It seems like they hire 10 at a time when they're advertising, I'm not sure how often they do it though. I can ask my buddy if you like.

I have a buddy with OD in Las Vegas and he is happier than a tornado in a trailer park.
