What about water temp? I would think if the oil temp is high the water would go up too

I dunno. Hard to say if all you got was a light saying it was high. No temp gauge for oil?

Sounds like your oil cooler is failing. The Oil Cooler itself is only about $200 but you have to tear down the entire passenger side of the engine to get to it. 10 to 12 hours labor.

Don't isx have a oil thermo stat??

Oil coolers just don't stop cooling.
But a thermostat will stop the flow if not working correctly.

Actually, it sounds exactly like the oil cooler. It has not stopped working but it cannot handle a heavy load. Exactly what happened to my 09 ISX. Oil temp would spike up a steep grade then immediately recover, I could usually manage it by keeping the rpm's up. I am not a mechanic so I could be completely wrong. Just going on past experience. If it was the oil temp sensor I would think he would have a constant fault. Based on what the OP says is happening it sounds like exactly what we had happen.
