I've always used a ratchet strap if needed. Vice grips are new to me

That's what I do along with keeping extra bungees and extra long zip ties, the ones that are like 3 feet

Pull the handle out and pinch it off with vicegrips so that though it want to retract, the vicegrips keep it locked out.
