me and my trainer got a load in flagstaff picking up at 11pm. We are delayed right now between 7-9am. Do we get detention pay? And does that include me since I am a trainee?

You may want to check with your dispatcher, fleet manager, or payroll department of the company that you work for. Also, your trainer might be able to help you on that.
Good luck to you! God bless you and your family!

I doubt the trainee would get any detention pay. The trainer may be lucky if they get anything. But regardless, detention pay is very company and situation specific.
-
Agreed. I don't think the company is going to pay out twice for your trainer and you. If you get paid mileage in training then you have a chance, but if it's a flat daily rate like mine was, you're out of luck. Don't take this the wrong way, but your time is not that valuable (yet).InfoWarrior25 Thanks this.

Might split the regular rate between the two of you. Some companies do it that way. Seems the fairest.
They better!!!
Sitting around forced in someone's break room unpaid is bad for morale. That is if they even let you. -
Most trainees only get a daily rate while with a trainer. Which means no extras for anything.
Additionally, I have been denied detention after 13 hours at the dock. Company said they don't pay detention if a 10 hour break is incurred and because I was an hour early... NO DETENTION! Needless to say, I was angry and nearly got fired over it.InfoWarrior25 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
What were you told during orientation?
What information does your driver handbook have concerning this. -
Inform despatch of potential delay in written form.
Update every few hours. This gives them an opportunity to assist, and a record of your dock times.
Then request detention pay once you're loaded. Industry 'standard ' is 2 hours free, so
11 pm appointment time, 9 am loaded, 10-2=8 billed hours.
For an owner operator, detention may be $20-$50/ hour, or $250-$500 for a 24 hour period, but has to be billed/approved. Some customers refuse to pay, or the broker is too scared to ask, or thieves it.
So - the amount that trickles down to you will be on a "per truck" basis. Best to ask your driver manager.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
What did your trainer say?
-
I'd say welcome to OTR trucking, prepare to be used and have you're time mean nothing to your employer and don't ever expect to be compensated fairly. You have to take the bad with bad pretty much all the time.
