Just a few days ago, on a quiet stretch of interstate during daylight hours, 2 prior flashing message signs stating left lane ends ... get to where the cones are clearly visible about a quarter mile ahead ending the lane. A car behind who was slowly closing on me, then moves out from behind me to pass. I think Okay, this individual will gas on it and get around ... well, no. The vehicle continues to SLOWLY pass at the same rate of speed they've been driving all day. I'm slowing down to help them but they still seem clueless. I'm both laughing and getting pissed at the sheer stupidity or major mental malfunction, whatever is the case. She finally begins to panic a bit about the time her rear bumper aligns with my from bumper, and quickly moves over in front of me, after hitting the first 2 cones.
I did not see her with a phone in her hand or otherwise distracted by anything. I came to the conclusion she could not see/read the signage or see the ending lane ahead until she was right literally right on it. This incident was hard to chalk up to inattentive, or aggressive, or distracted driving. Poor vision is the only thing that makes sense given the situation as I witnessed it.
Lane closed ahead... Oh my time to pass!

Naw, it was inattentive driving all the way. People zone out, they just mentally aren't thereLepton1 and TheDude1969 Thank this.

What we have here is a slow brain reaction to any outside input. Around these parts we call that just plain stupid.

I prefer Iowa's method....stick a sign out saying....maaaayyy be a cop ahead.....get over.
I'd do that job for free ... Walkie talkie the cars that don't merge early. Get within a quarter mile of the merge point...I call ya in and you get a ticket on the other side of the zone. I get a radar gun to... So double whammy probably.
All proceeds go to edumacation funds.

Great discussion. So far very civil with good viewpoints.
In my first year of driving I became irate at a merge, and decided to be 'Ronnie Road Blocker' (love that one, right up there with Terry Tuff Nuts).
Equally rookie MO state trooper issued me ticket for 'failure to maintain lane'. Wow. Didn't realize the implications of that offense. It's right up there.
Over the years I've calmed down. California would drive me up the wall. I put it down to a lack of - well everything, reading comprehension, mental capacity, vision.
My standard MO now is to heed signs, move to appropriate lane early, slow without using service brakes, gear down, warn traffic behind me of sudden speed reductions with 4 ways (only for brief periods), and maintain a speed sufficient to allow about 100 feet of space in front.
I cannot control Ivan Idiot, Gary Grass rider, Tony Tailgater, Ronnie Road Blocker, Rachel Ramp Runner, or what time the sun will rise tomorrow, so I just cover my assets and allow for inevitable stupidity.
I look at it this way. I may stop 30 minutes up the road and goof off for 12 minutes and 39 seconds. I never get bent out of shape about that, why should a traffic delay phase me?
That, and - I'm a career driver. If I allowed regular, known facets of the task to ruin my cherub like demeanor, then I may as well hang up the reins.double yellow, Lepton1, Pumpkin Oval Head and 7 others Thank this. -

I forgot, what did Ronnie the roadblocker mean?TheDude1969 Thanks this. -
I don't try and take up both lanes at one time, but I will drive in the lane that is closing soon in order to Ronnie the rush of cars that merge at the last second.
I can't imagine the stress involved trying to stop within pissing distance behind the car in front of you, to then, pull up 8 feet to stop again, and then repeat that cycle for a couple miles. I much rather scoot along in 2nd gear laughing at the frustrated drivers.TheDude1969, FerrissWheel and tucker Thank this. -
I think those guys blocking closing lanes do a GREAT job! Those vehicles merging at last moment are causing great delays and are forcing us in the open lane to constantly break and shift gears. That's annoying!
