Whats the longest you can leave otr and still be considered experienced? I finally have a year and I'm trying to get into tanker so I can physically do more things and not pull a 53' box. I HATE dry van and I'm not about to mess around with 53' spread axle flats. I don't want to leave for a year only to find out I have to start out at the bottom again. I ask this because I managed to get a interview for a 13.50hr street-sweeper position. I honestly don't want to drive a street sweeper, but If i stay out here any longer I'm going to have to give up my pet cat, I'll still be broke and never home. I applied for Coastal Transport and I haven't heard back from them. Chinatown gave me a list of companies I'll have to re-call to see if they have any openings.

    Thanks for reading

    In the street sweeper?

I'm still lost as to why the OP will never be home while driving a street sweeper.

No, take the cat OTR. I've seen many OTR drivers with cats in the truck.
Can mess up an MVR quickly driving a street sweeper; people claim you scratched their car, etc. and you lose. Stay away from that street sweeper job.
There's a thread on here somewhere listing companies that allow cats.

Sorry but im a "just me in the truck" kind of driver. I've seen them too, furry little buggers sitting on the dashboard lording over anything it sees below. I guess I'll pass on the job then. And hold out for Coastal and run down that list in the morning.

    Thanks for answering everyone.

Three questions: how are you still broke after 1 year OTR? And why would you work for $13.50hr? Also, what exactly is wrong with 53 van? A local LTL company won't have you still broke after 1 year..... Food for thought.

I worked for .28cpm then after 6 months I went to work for swift.

Also I keep getting sent into Cali in a endless loop, I spend more time sitting than making money. Even when I do move it takes to much time to go anywhere. It usually starts like this.

Go to phx then pick up a loaded t-call going to Cali.
    Deliver.
Get lucky and maybe they have a load headed out of Cali.
Take 7 hours to drive from Hesperia back to phx.
Bobtail to Otay Mesa from phx because they have no loads.
Sit in Otay Mesa FOR THREE ********* *********** DAYS.
    THREE.
Get sent to the LA terminal to either get local work (75$ for 14 hours worth of work) or a empty.
From there at some point and time maybe I get to leave Cali.

I almost got a reset two days ago and would have collected layover if they hadn't throwen a load at me that had next to no info other than show up and wait in it. At 00:30 they send me this expecting me to go to LA by 6am after waiting all day Monday.

I hate dry van and I hate the 5 feet of overhang I don't see a future in it. It's like why invest in a truck when I could just be a company driver and pull a van and have less liability. Every OO I talk is all grumpy about the rates, and 1.18 for lease purchase is insulting. My last company paid .90cpm.

I'll see if Conway and OD have anything right now to keep me in T/T experience, If the max I can be out is 3 months.
