I understand the take 8hr sleeper birth and you get back the hrs you had when you went into the bunk. But I got a question.
Say I took a 2 hr break with 5 hrs left to drive and 6 hrs left on my 14. So after the break I would have 4 hrs left on both. Then I drive 3 hrs and take 8 hrs in the sleeper. What would I have on my clock when I come back out of the sleeper? Can it be done this way or does the 8hrs sleeper have to come first. Please explain. I just can't wrap my head around the split.

Based on my qualcomm when I've done things like this. You'd have 8 hours on your driving and 11 hours on your 14.

doesn't matter which comes first the 8 or the 2 or the 2 or the 8 or the 8 and then an 8 again.

go over to logbook.com and download the software and use it to check yourself and stay out of violation.

You burned 3 hours between the 2 and the 8 so you'd have 11 shift hours and 8 driving hours left to work with.

You could do that as long as you don't drive over 3 hours before you take your 8. Drive over 3 hours and youll get a driving violation from ELog. Off duty does not stop your clock unless its either 10 hours or 2 hours combined with the 8 sleeper. In other words, the 2 hours you sit is still going to count down on you. That's how it was with the two Elogs I run anyway. It may be different with other elogs but the only thing that stopped mine was an 8 hour sleeper break. That's why I stopped running them.

Yes I understand the clock keeps running. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the split. I'm on elogs but I just like to know the time I'm gonna have left before I do the breaks. Because usually I'm trying to get home quicker lol

I call my safety Dept and have them calculate my hours. I have no idea how they figure up split sleepers. The language is very confusing...

When in doubt go to the source which is the government website
    .https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/hours-service/summary-hours-service-regulations
.then search for sleeper berth examples.
    .
.Ladies and gentlemen we are no longer in high school; it is perfectly acceptable to copy the government examples of correct logbook entries and use them as guide for your specific situation. Better yet printout the examples for using the split sleeper berth and keep them along with your own logbook for reference and explanation to Dot officers when needed.
