For a newbie, I would highly recommend a tandem body job hauling gravel at a construction job. Tight spaces (forward and backing up), maneuvering in traffic (with idiot drivers all around you) and getting the "full" use of a tranny into your brain. Hauling half weight loads will teach you nothing about using the transmission in traffic, on hills or at higher speeds. When I started (more than half a century ago), I was put on a 5 ton, 3 yard body job. It kicked the crap out my "Big Truck Driver" ego; however, with badly worn out brakes and hills to to climb and descend I quickly learned what it took to keep maximum load weight under control. I even had to hit the ditch a few times to bring the #### thing to a stop before I lost control of the load. Yes, even "using" the ditch can save your life and possibly others around you.
You had better learn everything there is to learn about hauling a 30 ton load on a public highway at 65 MPH. #### happens too fast at that speed and there is no time for guessing or thinking about what you should do when the time comes.amaxi31, SouthernNortherner, redpb97 and 2 others Thank this. -

Are living in the 80's? Right now? A ton of companies run Ultra shifts, Automatics, and let me tell you, they are better in the hills than a manual. Technology done jumped up. Not to mention most recruiting companies now days have fairly new equipment. Hence, why I chose my screen name, (ProStarBrakes). Because in the curves of the mountains out West en-route to Cali in snow and ice back in 2014 i believe it was (the year after they had that bad winter up North cuz i dodged that one, took off), someone was broke down in the inside line and I came around the curve with traffic backed up and (#### cops blocked off two lanes to make sure the broke down car was safe) the #### thing stopped. I was hauling ### as I always do i don't give a #### what kind of weather i'm in. I.... Haul... Arse... So I had to make the split decision whether to let that equipment do it's thang or try to swerve over into the shoulder, well... I chose to let it do it's thang. Stopped almost like there was no snow or ice. Think I had to have been hauling a fairly heavy load, so the idea that hauling heavier load is more of a challenge is somewhat ####ing stupid. Bobtailing is dangerous.
####. you're confusing the newbies, and i don't like that. I was one of them. I still consider myself a Rook, but if u ask me, i think i'm better than half the veterans out there, and believe me I don't like that. It scares me. I say that with not pride, but I say that with pure fear. Cuz some of you are that #### stupid.Last edited: Aug 23, 2016
