I found a truck but the guy who bought it from a trucking company never registered the title . It is open , signed on back by owner but not dated .
If I sign the title and go to register it are there going to be any fees , taxes ... you know like a car when you dont tag it for years ?
I was told by him and another driver that commercial trucks do not have any such taxes . That you can simply stop tagging it and then when ready to roll again tag it just like normal . I think it has been sitting for a couple years without being registered .

Depends on your state. I know here in KY no matter what vehicle it is, you have to bring in that title and a bill of sale if it has another buyer in the #1 spot on the back, and prove that you bought it. They also need that receipt in order to know how much to charge you for taxes.

If you buy it out of state here in KY, you also have to get it inspected by the sheriff's office prior to being allowed to have it registered.

I called here and all they would tell me was that it was not legal to just sign it that he had to register it then sell it to me but that does not answer my question on taxes. As I understand it there are no "taxes" on a commercial vehicle since it is not personal property but was not sure if any fees for it sitting unregistered for a couple years. Maybe not .

If on the back of the title it has 2 or 3 separate "Owner" spots, and the state does not "require" a commercial vehicle to be registered before re titling, than yes you can do it. but if you called your registration office and they say that it has to be registered, than it sounds like you now know why you may have caught a "good deal" on the truck.

So you are saying that the current owner may have to actually register and tag the truck for this year in order for it to be sold and registered again?
Not sure if we require that . When I told the state that the title was open they said I could not just jump a registration by signing it , but of course that is technically illegal since I am not the person that actually purchased the truck from company in Iowa, so I was assuming that if they did not know this I could just sign like I bought the truck from Iowa . Might have to call again and talk to someone else and ask it it needs to be currently registered in order to buy it .

Okay got the scoop from the county . Got someone on the phone this time that knew something . In Kansas as long as the title had not been switched over to something like a non highway title while it sat around un registered there are no extra fees or other requirements to register it . As long as the back of title has a current purchase date within 30 days of registration .
So hopefully this no date on the back is correct and has not been altered .

You might have to show a prior 2290 form (Fed highway Use Tax) to register but title should be possible in some states.

    Be very careful.

Here in Arkansas it's the Revenuer (Yes we use that term) who will get you for a percentage of what you paid for a vehicle. If you kept the sale price below 4000 when declaring a car for example to the State to get Tags, you pay nothing. But at 4000, it's 10% and on up.

Then each year you have to pay the Revenuer again based on the value of vehicle. I think I pay about 40 bucks at most for my old worthless vehicle. It's personal property, same with RV's etc and Mobile Homes.

I recall that it's 45 for a truck tag to a Tahoe or something (8000 pounds) and 29 for any old car tag. I don't know what it is for a CMV tag anymore. But in Maryland it would easily approach 200 dollars plus emissions plus inspection plus plus plus plus. That was one of the things that caused me to emigrate from that cursed state.

I asked the guy to register it or get the title holder to allow me to buy from them and then they give him his money . I have not heard back from him so i am guessing there is a problem beyond what he has stated.

If the title is open I would ask for a front copy and take it to the state of issue (iowa DMV) to see if there is any issues with the title if they say it is good I would then date the back and turn it into the state of Kansas. If the title is signed and dsted there is no requirement for a bill of sale.
