i once knew a driver named Derick.

he had not a horses head.

but he'd pump and pump his brakes all day long

thinking he was an ABS system!

Here ya go, OP, this will show you the derrick on a drilling rig. This is the equipment that actually drills the hole. This is an older type of drilling rig, but the derrick is the same.

Once the hole is drilled, the rig moves out. Other equipment is brought in to do the completion work. Then, the well is brought into production - this is when the emulsion (oil, gas, an saltwater) starts flowing up to the surface as a result of pressure underground.

The device you posted a picture of is called a pumping unit, or more commonly, a pump jack. It is used to bring the emulsion to the surface when reservoir pressure is no longer sufficient to do so.

Yes I've been rigged up on top of frac many of times. It was always a good little break to go fishing for a tool string instead of the normal drill outs and toe preps. First time I saw all that 3" iron on a frac site I knew I wouldn't be putting in any applications!!

Now that the speculation is over I'll answer you. The pump jack is brought in when the well output is no longer economical to run a ESP or gas lift . If you see one the well is below 500 bbl a day. Our number is 400 a day.
Each producer has his own limit based on production and style of PJ. They cost around $85,000
