Was driving through a windstorm, with a police officer in the left lane next to me.

I was driving slow as I was empty and did not want to get rolled over.

A tree crashed right in front of us from the right side down onto both lanes about 200 - 300 feet away, I still had to slam on the brakes despite going well below the speed limit.

Apparently the truck hood was not latched completely from my pre-trip an hour earlier and flew completely open blocking my view ( I was safely stopped at this point).

I got out to re latch my hood and boy was that police officer pissed, got yelled at but no ticket, officer had to get out and direct traffic around the tree and was probably too busy.

Man was I red-faced for my carelessness in failing to latch the hood and having it fly open right next to the officer.

You said "incident" and I thought property damage, tickets, marked dac. I'm happy your mistake didn't cost you any of these things. Lesson learned and all it cost was some embarrassment.

    Happened to me before.
    Embarrassing, yes.

Well, my wife was driving, as I recall . . . still my fault.

In your situation though - there's never a cop around when you need one . . .

Things happen but "what if" there was no police officer, you driving faster, traffic moving fast in front and behind and you hurt somebody for your careless mistake?

Having said that, thanks for sharing

It's funny how cops sometimes let things go. Just proves they are human after all.

I remember years ago I was somewhere in North Carolina, driving through some small town (they're all the same). I accidently ended up on a truck restricted road, and in my confusion I lost track of my speed and was doing 7-10 over. Passed a cop and hit the brakes. Oops, engine brake still on lol. Right there was three potential tickets. Silly cop didn't even bat an eye.

You were very lucky! I'll bet that is a mistake you will NEVER make again.

And here we thought all the blood and guts on the windshield was on the OUTSIDE of it!:D
