This is not a truck accident per-say, but I would like to see who has heard about this, @Bob Dobalina , @G13Tomcat ,@F150Jim and @johndeere4020 I don't know if this made the state wide circuit or not when I was on my way home from work around 1:30pm today traffic on I-90 west here in Cleveland just bottled up and stopped and was moving very very slowly. Bad wreck so I turned on the AM 1560 ODOT station and got a bunch of static but was able to hear there was an accident on I-90 west. They ended up shutting down I-90 west and traffic had to exit onto West 117th and find another way home.

Well it turned out a state trooper was writing a ticket and someone veered off the road and struck and killed the trooper this afternoon. They arrested the driver of the car, said they were giving the man who hit the trooper some sobriety tests. I don't know if that story made the state wide evening news or CB chatter or not.

I don't understand it, why it happens so often. I've done reading on it and I don't get it, one theory is something called the "moth effect" have you ever heard of that? It's where they say some people are drawn to the lights and just aim right towards them.

    I really don't get it...

It's related to the rubbernecking disease & symptoms include steering into eye path.

Synonyms include cell phone, food, drink, untrained, unqualified.

This happens a lot with drunks! CHP used to run"slick tops," (no lightbar,) lights in grill and windshield, rear flashing orange light in rear window. It was SOP to leave the rear facing light on at traffic stops.
A study showed that impaired drivers would zero in on those lights, and run right into them.
The use of lightbars has cut way down on that. The various lights of a lightbars don't attract like those single flashers did.
But the fact is that if you are stopped beside, (or at crashes in) the road you are at risk. Applies to road construction crews and hook drivers as well.

CLEVELAND – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of Trooper Kenneth Velez, of the Cleveland Post, after he passed away this afternoon following a traffic crash near Lakewood, Ohio in Cuyahoga County.
The crash occurred on Interstate Route 90 near mile post 164 at approximately 12:52 p.m. Trooper Velez was conducting traffic enforcement when we was struck outside of his patrol car.
“This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,” said Colonel Paul Pride, Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Velez family during this difficult time.”
Trooper Velez, 48, graduated as a member of the 118th Academy class in November 1989. Trooper Velez is survived by his three children.

This after Ohio announced a week ago a crackdown on people that don't move over for troopers on the shoulder ...sad .

Sad. I hadn't heard about it. I hate hearing these stories about cops, construction workers, tow truck drivers, and drivers broke down on the shoulder getting killed like that.

It's happened a lot in Massachusetts too. It got so bad that the state police there is installing reflective tape on the back of new interceptors to make the vehicles more visible at night (they also think the blue emergency light pattern may have something to do with it as well). The one thing I have noticed is that accidents like these as of late involved police cars with only blue lights instead of cars with red and blue alternating lights. OHP's cars typically use blue lights but I've seen some with red lights installed (albeit in the grill), mostly on the Dodge Chargers.

    Rest in peace brother!

Had a friend that was giving someone the sobriety test and another drunk hit his car and he was able to get the one he was dealing with out of the way with minor injuries.

It's crazy how cars are drawn to the lights like a bug zapper thing.
