I drive 2013 Volvo 670 with ISX engine 450hp@2100rpm and 10 spd tranny.I recently improved mpg from 5.8 to 6 mpg.I don't drive slow, often 70 mph or faster with all kinds of loads ranging from 15 k to 45 k.So,is 6 mpg good?
What mpg should I be getting?

What do you pull? 6 is decent, I do low 7 pulling flatbed, I could get it up to 8 if I try. If I was pulling container I would barely get 6
Edit-
Hmm, looks like I do almost 9mpg average accord to my company...
But here's my actual data

Lepton1 and diesel drinker Thank this. -
Sometimes I pull van sometimes reefer.Oh and I have APU so I don't idle much.
-
At 70 mph I wouldn't expect much over 6. I have an 09 Prostar with a 435 Cummins. I keep it at 62, across all terrain and load weights, I'm at just over 7 mpg. No APU, so that's with idling 1 to 2 hours a day, some days more.
MachoCyclone and diesel drinker Thank this. -
I don't have such fancy data (this may be a good thing) so I am basing my data on what it displays on a dash.
-
Actually @70 mph on CC it displays 7.5 -8.2 mpg on pretty flat terrain.I do a bit more city driving than your average OTR driver though.
-
The dash is pretty much accurate. I just like to keep track for the long run.
diesel drinker Thanks this. -
Oh. I gave you my actual. Dash display/ECM feed, I'm at 8.

My 2015 Detroit 65 MPH 10 speed pulling reefer across all 48 and not really trying gets 7.2 - 7.4 real world, 3 month averaging (not basing on truck ecm) and that is typically running the APU 8-12 hours/day when temperature is not comfortable, and rarely taking home time.
Don't make the mistake of looking at 1 week or one long trip to figure your real MPG. You need at least 6 weeks IMO to figure MPG with your real driving style and real average load and real typical fuel blend, and real average terrain and weatherLast edited: Oct 7, 2016
MachoCyclone Thanks this. -
I would love to get what the ECM on my truck says I get. Hand calculated on spreadsheets, my average mpg is around 7.9. The ECM most days will have me at 9 mpg or more for trip. Best I ever got on a actual pump to pump was just about 9 mpg, while the ECM was showing around 10 mpg. Summer, it is not uncommon for me to average 8+ while the winter it is more common to average just over 7 mpg. I do full month averages on the spreadsheets that also show individual pump to pump mpg. Mine is a pre-EGR Detroit 60 12.7L 500hp hooked up to an 18 speed.
bzinger Thanks this.
