The first company I worked for I had ELD. There were times when I accidentally drove under a load logged in as "off duty driving". Dispatch went back and edited it . With modern technology I'm sure someone can "crack" and ELD and make them editable .... What happens if the ELD losses communication with the ECM ? After all some of these trucks will be 16 years old ...

I have heard you can play a little with RoadLog ELD.
-
I don't go over hours but it would be nice to back our hours up or have it possible to edit your Hos without showing that it was edited to the dot

As the driver all status's can be edited, but only drive time can be edited by the home office. And even if there is an edit, there is a notation placed where the edit happened, and you as the driver have to authorize the edit by approving your logs.
Elds are nothing more than a way to force the industry to be on a more even playing field with the mega carriers. What the smaller carriers need to understand that the days of "making your logs look good" are over. now it's gonna be about being efficient with your time management, and trip planning.Rideandrepair, CrappieJunkie, albert l and 2 others Thank this. -
I don't think so. . we will see editable eld android applications, standalone editable eld devices very soon. just wait a littleBoostedTeg and 01blackz28 Thank this.

The reason for the regulations to be written by the companies that sell the units is so they can sell the software to back office edit them, the regs are now pretty clear to what the driver can or can't do to prevent the driver from cheating.

No, they will not be valid.
PART 395—HOURS OF SERVICE OF DRIVERS
Subpart B—Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
§395.22 Motor carrier responsibilities—In general.
(a) Registered ELD required. A motor carrier required to use an ELD must use only an ELD that is listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's registered ELDs list, accessible through the Agency's Web site, www.fmcsa.dot.gov/devices.
Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395—Functional Specifications for All Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
4. Functional Requirements
4.3.2.8. Driver's Record Entry/Edit
4.3.2.8.1. Mechanism for Driver Edits and Annotation
(b) An ELD must not permit alteration or erasure of the original information collected concerning the driver's ELD records or alteration of the source data streams used to provide that information.
4.3.3. Motor Carrier's Manual Entries
(a) If a driver edits or annotates an ELD record or enters missing information, the act must not overwrite the original record.
(b) The ELD must use the process outlined in section 4.4.4.2 of this appendix to configure required event attributes to track the edit history of records.
(c) Driver edits must be accompanied by an annotation. The ELD must prompt the driver to annotate edits.
http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrieveECFR?gp=1&ty=HTML&h=L&mc=true&=PART&n=pt49.5.395
An ELD must restrict availability of motor carrier entries outlined in this section only to authenticated “support personnel” account holders.

Nothing in there prevents a small carrier from editing. It prevents a driver for a big carrier from editing, he had to go through "support personnel" aka safety/log department. At the small carriers the safety department is the owner who is also the dispatcher salesman head mechanic human resources etc etc and in the case of one truck companies the driver.jsnell, Mattflat362, BoostedTeg and 4 others Thank this. -
Where can I get an edible ELD?
Oldironfan and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
And the edits will have to be tracked and annotated, they cannot overwrite the original data and they will have to be on approved ELDs, etc. So "editable eld android applications, standalone editable eld devices" will not be valid... just as I posted.
