If mounting it to a headache rack then you need to run ground straps. Im sure there is rubber of some sort between the fram and the headache rack mounts.. The u-bolts alone are not enough to get good ground. Doing the out back is a good way... Just don't forget to ground the bracket.

... If you don't want to buy anything.. Mount it on top of the headache rack with a stud mount and get a fiberglass antenna. Have talked a few guys that have done that good results, but clearance does come into play. Anything mounted behind or on the side is going to be very directional.
