Anti-gel over kill?

Do you keep the filter insulation on while driving or just overnight ?

 

I keep it on till spring if I put it on. If my trucks not running it's in a warm shed. Insulating your filters will do little good if left out in the cold all night. If I had to leave truck outside overnight I'd get a heating pad on filter and or some of those heated fuel lines

 

How cold was it and how much of it did you use?

 

Driving. Started to stutter and seriously lose power on grades. Pull over and run the idle up to 1200 for 10-15 minutes and it would be ok for a few more miles. Repeated, until I got to the point it wouldn't stay running. Road service guy said my fuel filters were nearly solid, and didn't have anything good at all to say about Howe's. Neither did I, after that. Ambient temps around -4/-5F, almost no wind, a calm, clear Vermont winter night.

 

I've never had an issue with Power Service.

 

How much of Howes did you use per tank and how big are your tanks?

 

I've never gelled up regardless of the brand at those temperatures if used as directed. Howe's only treats 160 gallons below 0.

 

Biodiesel requires using double dosage, says so right on the can. I usually dump one 1/2 gal bottle in each tank (90 gal tanks) when single digits and below 0. Otherwise I use half a bottle in each tank.

 

I use this when it's single #s or lower.... Never gelled knock on wood....I eyeball the ratio trying to do 250 gals per jug.

Years ago had water/ice in fuel filters..that sucked.

 

I keep kerosene with me during the cold months . If I ever gel up again , just pour the kerosene and 911 in filters to get going again . I use kerosene exclusively for my webasto heater anyway so always have kerosene on hand .
