I don't know a lot about these new diesel exhaust systems. However, I heard that 2011 trucks have had a lot of problems with them. Even up to 2013. I don't know if there are even several manufacturers and where to begin on reading about all the available options. My primary concern is dependability when I buy a semi Truck, and I need to be able to travel into California so I need to get a post 2011 truck with one of the new exhaust systems. However, I need more search terms to get the information I'm seeking about them on the web.
I'm aware that Detroit 60s, and Cummings ISX are among the best engines to put into an 18 wheeler. I have also loved the Paccar engines. I've gotten an average of 7.8 mpg on a Kenworth T680 with a Paccar, and those engines look built to outlast them all. I may be wrong tho. With the exhaust systems, I have much less information concerning the reliability of them. I mean, what is my best option, and how do I develope a search term that will find me trucks equiped with that option. I want to be able to go into truck papaers website and pull up only the trucks with the most dependable DEF option, along with the best engines. Where do I begin?

P.S. I am concerned also about the environment. If these things work, then "buy a pre 2011 truck because California allows X amount of miles per year to be driver" is not a solution I need to hear. The problem is, to repair one from the ground up can cost as much as an engine rebuild, so I want to make sure I get the right one.

The trucks with the Cummins seem to have less problems and they seem to hold value . Almost every brand can be found with a Cummins .

Our '13 Volvos seem to be the worst in our fleet, as far as emissions. The '14s and '16s have been pretty much trouble free. They are all D13s. Our Cascadias are all DD13s now. We had some DD15s but they're gone. They've all been pretty decent. Some wiring issues in the DEF system with the earlier DD15s.

And it seems like every rental unit we get from Penske that has some kind of regen problem is a Volvo.

No technical experience, just my observations of our fleet.

Maybe a moderator can move this to the garage forum for you.

The DD15s we've run in the last 3 years have been far superior to the '11 and '13 Cummins we had. So far just a doser nozzle.

I've been looking at a 2012 Freightliner, also with a Cummins. This unit has been a Penske maintained unit with 630k miles also with an APU unit installed. Im not a big fan of Freightliners because of there cab noise, but $28K seem like a good deal. What do you think ?

I would run the VIN through freightliner service and look at warranty work. Insist on Penske service records. Pull an oil sample and put it on a dyno.

Historically the new Cummins need a full inframe by 750k. Ours was 32k and down to the crank because of dpf damage. They choke on the dirty air the dpf force feeds the engine. And make sure the dpf filter has been replaced in the last 50k.

    Just my 2 cents.

My dad's 2012 FL with the DD13 has been nothing but trouble(mostly emissions related stuff) and now with only 525k on it it's in the shop for a complete O/H. I haven't talked to him to see what actually happened but I guess it's a common issue with the DD13 and since they have to tear into it for fix the issue they're going to do a complete rebuild.

The lease companies were running the ISX in Freightliners, but no longer are. McCoy never did.

Gordon was buying Cummins, Heartland switched to Detroit, I can go on, but not having to listen to that variable geometry turbo and the issues with those and having run a DD15 since new for over 4 years doing mostly regional, I'd say Detroit.

The leasing companies, a few of them anyway, seem to be liking Paccar, again, but Freightliner has far more of the numbers.

Airoldi Brothers National Lease is running Volvo, seem to be doing alright, but they do in house service, with a big shop in Oak Creek, WI. The shop is the answer, for any of them, imo.
