With all there is 1 thing that gets them in trouble.
Buying a to big bore engine when you don't need it.
If you only run at 80 000lbs max then a 13l engine will work best.
Running at 50 000 to 60 000max,you might want to think about a 11l.
Reason is that a to big a bore engine doesn't generate enough heat in the system. -

This guy knows warranties. -
from 08 to 2011 stay away from these years.
Siegfried, KB3MMX and swaggerjacker Thank this. -
I'm glad I got out of trucking so I don't have to deal with this stuff anymore. -
Things wear out...No matter the profession...Quality and workmanship and repair are all keys to things lasting..
The ole 60 series are known for a million before rebuilds...All these emission engines, its anyones guess how long it will last..
Best bet is pay attention to how it sounds, mpg, pulls and oil samples.. -
Every engine mfr has it's weakness. They are all struggling to meet smog laws and put reliability in their engines. Once you decide what engine mfr you want to go with do your best to research what dealer has the best reputation for helping you as business owner. Though not just at the point of purchase but as a well connected dealer through out the country because when you break down (and you will) more than likely it'll be far from home. The one suggestion that I can make is that you not only look at engine reliability but also take real close look at the "after treatment device" reliability and serviceability of the ATD. As an example Freightliner/Detroit has what is known as the "one box". This ATD has a non-serviceable DOC. This is critical because many issues can be fixed if the DOC face can be accessed. Good luck.

I had Detroit with the one box and DOC filters failed. Since they can't be replaced and they tried a special cleaning mode and that basically cracked the DOC filters. The price to replace the emission box $12,000 at 630,000 miles on the truck.
Cummins had trouble with oil and the over head cams going out out. Cummins has two versions on the ISX. The first one having more trouble then the second one. This guy has good video on the ISX and you can see how the emission system work on. The Cummins. He even just did a full rebuild on ISX if you want to learn how the emission system and see how the carbon from EGR has affected the engines.

Thanks for this video. It's sobering. I feel so bad for the guy that purchased that truck. Time to subscribe to Rawze's channel. Thanks again!
