Driven in freezing rain many times where there was plenty of spray and ice. It's not the greatest indicator in some situations.

I listen for the sound of Spray and the crunch of deicer/salt. Also Google maps can help you find bad patches of road they'll be yellow/red usually.

Saia/OD/Ups etc guys are usually a good indicator of road conditions, the slower they are going usually means the worse the roads are. There are a lot of ways to get hints.

My truck has a good thermometer. And my dash cam has an ir thermometer that is very accurate pointed at the road about 400 meters down the road.

I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer intended for household use from Radio Shack (not sure where I'll get next one). Put the outdoor wireless under front visor.
I also watch other vehicles for spray from tires and if in doubt, will reach out and touch front of mirrors. Sometimes floor the throttle and watch for spin warning light. Doesn't need to be 32 to freeze. Especially bridges, they can ice at 34 even 35 or 36.

I also have a 3 truck rule... after I see a third truck in a ditch, find a parking place ASAP. (cars don't count)

One thing to keep in mind using a gadget such as a digital thermometer. .. they aren't always accurate, and they are measuring air temperatures. Not actual temperature, there is a difference.. I'm old skool watch for spray, look at back side of mirrors , watch other trucks and look waayyy ahead. And use anticipation and common sense .

If the roads are wet ,moisture in the air, temp. is rapidly dropping .....then more than likely proly going to have at the very least ice bridges.

Take what happened in Baltimore a few days ago with that tanker and all the accidents they had. They were reporting bad road conditions before it even happened. Yet nobody heeded those warnings and just kept hammering down until it was too late.
