Driving over 11 hours?

    Are you still with Schneider? If so they will just bring it up at your next quarterly training date, remind you to shut down and let them call in a wrecker, yada yada yada.
    I have 3 violations in the past 4 months, they said if I get another I'll be put on probation.

    An HOS violation is just that no matter how long it is over. Same with form and matter. Stay in trucking long enough and your going to bust one of those clocks. If caught over on your HOS your going to be place OOS as well as fined. It don't really matter if you are on paper or elogs. the fines vary by state.

    My company would shoot you if you went over in Canada. Yeah thanks I worded that poorly in my post. What i meant 2 hours on top of the 13. You'd get a nice call in dispatch if you went over in Canada but they'd just yell at you on the phone for US ones.

    The most valuable thing that you possess is your name. Your wife takes on your name, your children have your name. Your car and your property are registered in your name.

    Contrary to popular belief, the name of the trucking company on the truck isnt most important, its that name on the driver door. Put your name on the top of the driver door.

    Jerry Rice made a name for himself...the best receiver in the NFL. Because Jerry Rice was Jerry Rice, Joe Montana could be Joe Montana. Be Jerry Rice. Dont ever drop the ball. You're a good hand. Make some slight adjustments and be that driver on the top of the pile.

    When they get that load that has to be there, who are they going to give the important load to?

    If you want to have some fun with them use the deferral exception. It is almost the same as the adverse conditions exception, but spread over two days and no special conditions (read: enforcement officer's discretion) other than complying with the regulation.

    You can drive up to an extra two hours on Day 1 (taken from the two hours non-consecutive off-duty time). You then add the time to your eight hours consecutive off-duty time on Day 2. You still can't bust your 16-hour work shift on Day 1, though, and your total driving over two days can't exceed 26 hours and you must have 20 hours off-duty over those two days.

    Basically (maximums):
    Day 1
    Drive 15 hours
    On-duty 1 hour
    Off-duty 8 hours consecutive
    Day 2
    Drive 11 hours
    On-duty 1 hour
    Off-duty 12 hours (10 hours consecutive)
    Perfectly legal and can be repeated every two days ad infinitum.

    I used it a lot when I was hauling pipe because we only worked Monday to Friday. Friday would be Day 1 and Day 2 would just get lost in the weekend as I would have the entire time off anyhow. It made the difference between getting home on Friday, or having to spend the night in some dinky little town 2-3 hours from home.

    There are new regs on the books regarding Egregious Violations which are a step up in the wrong from regular violations. I think one example would be drving 3 hours past the 14 hour expiration. Carries more of a penalty.

    I used the weather excuse on my mentor's truck when I was suddenly in a thick blanket of fog and had to do 45mph for like 3 hours, one of which was spent backing down 3 miles of dead end road when I took a wrong turn in the middle of nowhere.

    I had a sit down chat with safety, who told me flat out that I'm not to do it again and if it was bad enough to use the rule, it's bad enough to shut down. Dispatch gave me the attaboy, though. You're mileage may vary.

    I got parked with one minute to go in NM, because there wasn't an open spot within an hour in any direction. I agreed to pay the convenience store owner 20 bucks for my 10 hours and he charged me 10 more when I informed him I needed 15 minutes to pretrip. And what gets me is the HOS rules force me to drive tired, because if I shut down and take a nap, my 14 is gone and I'm getting a service failure.
