My question is why are you not communicating with your company? I've had the pickup rescheduled when I was sitting for hours and ran out. If you have an hour (or two in a big city) away without even getting to a door I'd be calling and finding out what to do. Hell they may say get the load, get towed to a truck stop and take the 10 then deliver... They may say go get a spot and we'll get a new appt. They may say suck it up...
    Never really know.
Now if I was a l/o I'd just wait as I'd be making tons of money off detention (as I would not have accepted the rate sheet if it didn't have that). At the worst case I would have left an hour ago and said the hell with it.

I for one am simply appalled by two of the comments posted by two of the most outspoken e log advocates on our little forum. Just appalled.

Tell the shipper you out of time. Like someone said it won't be more that a few more hours then you'll get your 11 back.
Gonna be a happy day later tonight and tomorrow while your driving like a zombie, just get to a truck stop and shut down and get some rest, tell your office. Stand by your guns.

Never had this problem personally, I run paper OTR.

Do let us know how it turns out.

You'll see, tell that shipper your out of time, you need a few hours, and magically they will have a little spot you can sit in for a few hours.

Anytime your in a major city filled with union workers trip plan that you may be there for 3+ hours. I.E (Memphis Chicago Atlanta Los Angeles.) Sometimes I'll reschedule pick up and delivery times behind my companies back because I may end up getting held up at one stop and start burning into my 14. If you get pre-planned while your unloading at your last stop, try too get some info on the shipper. Google Maps is good at pinpointing the address of business being typed in and will sometimes have a good number to get in contact with the shipper and you can ask if they have some space for you to do your 10. Check the satellite and see if they're any abandon shopping areas or large spots around that a 74" vehicle could fit into. Also work with your dispatcher and just be honest about rescheduling. I know there are some mean dispatchers out there that don't give a crap but lets be honest shippers and receivers always go by appointment and when you get there 30mins to an hour early you could still sit 4+ hours. Sometimes it works but I rather get yelled at for rescheduling than to be yelled at for violating my hours.

Got loaded, tarped, and back out on the street with my clock showing 7hr 42 min in the sleeper. So I'll sit here for a minute finishing up my paperwork, the use the hours I get back to get the hell away fron Chicago before calling it.

Supposed to be in KY by 11am tomorrow, we'll see how that looks in the morning.

Thanks for all the advice. I've only been solo going on a month now and I'm learning to really dislike shippers without overnight parking. And Chicago.

Right but the OP went in with 4 hours remaining. But apparently, according to some, he was supposed to know that 4 hours wasn't enough and was supposed to take a service failure and remain out at the truck stop. Never mind the possibility that he may not have been able to arrive with any more hours, even if he wanted to, and that he may have been working on an appointment basis.

At this hour, you may as well figure on getting a reserved spot at one of the truck stops SE of Chicago off of 80 or find some other hidden honey hole which is difficult not knowing the area well. Today seems to be a busy day for truck traffic everywhere. But you need to get out of Chicago and across into Indiana by 06:30 at the latest.
