We live in a computer age now. I remember my first job I had to fill out manual time sheets and hand write work orders and reports. If I wanted to change something with my pension/benefits, I had to mail in a form. Paying bills and cashing the paycheque was done in person at the bank. Now, my work orders are filled in on a computer, my daily time sheets, pension, benefits etc are all done through a computer program linked directly to payroll/HR. Everything looks neat, tidy and professional. Paycheque is direct deposited and bills can be payed online. See where I'm going with this? The time savings and convienience of using computers over paper is astounding. Half a dozen taps on a screen and my logbook is good to go. Takes all of 20 seconds.

I think it can be equated to the way we had to start playing monopoly with my cousins as a kid. They loved to hide extra $500s under the board which weren't legit. So, we each got a notepad to record all transactions. It didn't bother the honest ones one bit, because it literally leveled the playing field. As a whole, we changed some rules as a group, but we all played by the same rules.

Hmmmm maybe that's why my dad always whipped my arse at monopoly lol

Or maybe you just didn't have the art of the deal in your blood... Lol

I can guarantee my paper logs are more accurate than an ELD will ever be. Why? I wrench on my own truck. When I do, it gets logged on line 4. Not always (hardly ever) "as I do it", but rather at the end of the weekend as I'm getting my paperwork in order to turn in. I'm usually enjoying my breakfast in the comfort of my home as I do this as I'm preparing to roll out. On an ELD? It'll ILLEGALLY show off duty from the time I park Friday afternoon until I roll out Monday morning...despite the maintenece performed over the weekend. Why? The last thing I want to do is sit in a cold truck Monday morning in the dead of winter (or a hot truck in the middle of summer) playing with a stupid ELD to "accurately" show my line 4 time over the weekend.
That's the problem with ELD's. You're not supposed to drive after 70 work hours in 8 days...but that stupid device doesn't know when you're working and when you're not. The ONLY time it is recording is line 3 time, which is pretty irrelevant in most instances because you've ALWAYS had to log enough time to cover the distance travelled. 99% of the time, there really isn't much difference because I don't run through big cities with traffic problems, and if I know I'm going to have to hit one, I time my departure from the house so as to minimize the traffic problems I may come across. I might be able to shave 15-30 minutes off my day logging by the odometer vs actual time...not enough to worry about, considering I'm not driving far enough for it to matter. What difference does 15-30 minutes make when you're only driving 9-10 hours? Same with my "on duty" time. My typical work week is 45-50 hours at most...so I don't need to falsify my clock by showing off duty when I should be on duty.
Sure, occasionally I need to use the 16 hour rule to get back home legally...and that's fine. When I get home, if it's barely over the 14, I might shave 15 minutes off here or there to keep that 16 hour rule available "just in case". I go home every night, and I'm not going to shut down 30 minutes from the house just because some silly bureaucrat in DC decided I don't have the hours to make it the last 20 miles because it took me 14.25 hours to get home 3 days ago.rogueunh, sourdiesel, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 1 other person Thank this. -
Bottom line, the ELD Mandate is a legalized protection racketeering. You gotta buy into the racket to be protected, or be crushed otherwise. It is no different than the old mafia sending enforcers down into the enclave to collect protection money from all the businesses.

At H&W when we turned our paper work in our log sheets were double checked, no getting away with anything even if you tried. They didn't want issues, and no company does. But I guess the computer age does so much for people many prefer it that way so they don't have to, no responsibility, no issue, no problem. Our trucks ran 65 mph, mine was a 1987 KW Cabover 365/855 9spd. That was earlier part of the 90's. Sure enjoyed most of those times.

I am sitting in the Cottonwood scales getting inspected right now (we have PrePass, so this is the first time in months I have been in a scale, guess I am representing the company today lol), and I heard the guy next to me (small local carrier from the bay area) and it seems he was 2 hours off on his logs (didn't hear the details of in what way he was off), and was trying to say it was because he went by his phone, and it must still be on a different time zone.
The officer paused, did the math, and said his phone must be set to a time zone out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! Lol
He said something about a $300 log falsification ticket...
This is why the enforcement agencies want ELDs, because this sort of thing is so common, and one of the reasons why the politicians see it as needed.
And I am on Peoplenet, and so all he did was ask me if I was on elogs, and left it at that... Lolscottied67 Thanks this.
