Not talking about trucking inclusively here but, since when have we actually been free here, or anywhere? There are rules. Too many? Maybe. But no matter where you go we have rules. Freedom is a myth. I don't care if you work in a truck, or in a cubicle, you follow rules or you're out. When walking down the street. When grabbing a coffee at a Starbucks. Rules are everywhere in any civilized country. Period.

Freedom is what you make of it. And unfortunately the freedoms we used to have, maybe 100 years ago, are gone. Because people.

No, a more accurate translation is "I am a free and sovereign individual, capable of ruling over my own existence. I have neither the need nor the desire for government to step in and do for me what I ought to be doing for myself."

 

If you are content only to have the freedoms deemed "acceptable" by others, then by all means sit back and watch your liberty wither away. If you wish to retain your freedom to rule over your own life, then you must be vigilant and oppose any effort to infringe upon your liberty. You would be amazed at how much freedom you COULD have if you made the choice to actually exercise your rights.

As for rules, property owners have the right to set the rules for their property. That is one of the freedoms they have. If you don't like the rules, don't visit the property. If a business owner wants my business, or an employer wants me to work for him, then his rules for his property must be acceptable to me...because just as the property owner has the right to set the rules for his property, I have the right to choose whether or not I wish to abide by those rules. If I choose not to, the property owner has the right to not allow me on the premesis. His right, my choice. Rules set by a property owner differ greatly from regulatory burdens placed by government.

When I roll out of the house in the morning, I stop for 5 things: loading, unloading, fueling, when I get home, and occasionally in town to have dinner with my wife if I'm passing through around the time she gets her lunch break. "Trip planning" is easy. I know where the load I have on the wagon is going, and I go there. Then, if there isn't anything coming back, I bounce. If there is, I pick it up and I go home. If I can't make it home, I get a room at the Holiday Inn Express...which has happened all of 5 times in the past 2 years. In other words, if I get where I'm going and somebody is parked in my spot, I reach into my pocket, pull out the keys to said vehicle, and I move it. I sleep VERY well at night, every night, at home, in my own bed, right next to my wife. When I leave the house, it is to get the job done and get back home. I don't have time, nor the interest to "sight-see", because anywhere I run is close enough to the house that I could hop in a POV and go any time I want.

In other words, direct your ignorant comments elsewhere, because they sure as hell don't apply to me.

 

My truck doesn't. It pre-dates all of the "remote diagnostic" stuff the OEM's are doing these days...which makes it even MORE vulnerable to cyber attacks because it wasn't designed to be connected and as such has minimal security features built in...assuming anyone accessing the system is present and plugged in, NOT remote through an internet connection.

Also. I made no claims about it being completely secure and, per your article, the manufacturers of these systems realize there are security measures they need to build in because of its internet connectivity.

There's nothing wrong with being cautious but there's no signs this will be any sort of widespread problem.
