You better call your DMV and see if your CDL is even valid (downgrading aside) because if you don't register it before the old one expires, then you can lose your CDL privileges altogether and have to start all over again, permits, school and road test to get the Class A back.

 

@Zackm81 This is what I found for Texas:
Driver is downgraded to a "driver license" (DL). Driver may re-establish the CDL by visiting a Driver License office, certify to a medical status and provide a valid MEC/Variance (if applicable). Texas will waive the written and drivng exams provided the DL has not expired. If the DL has expired the driver will be required to take and pass all CDL written/driving exams. The driver will also be required to pay the associated fee to upgrade the CDL.

 

There is a difference between the company registering it and a certification. The company is not responsible for guaranteeing that the card you provided is yours or real. Just that you gave them one. Rules have changed. You have to self certify at the dmv, where in you provide your card, your cdl, and fill out a paper that has multiple choice. Interstate non exempt, (most of us)
Interstate exempt. (Farmers who cross state lines ext..)
Intrastate non exempt. (Under 21 but Comercial)
Intrastate exempt, (Again farmers ext)

 

On a side note, dont forget that now you need a birth certificate or passport to renew a cdl.

 

That birth cert was a one time deal. Once your established in the system.

I don't recall needing it last time I renewed. I've got 4 months left to renew again so I guess I'll be finding out.

Mine was downgraded for over a year before I realized it. The physician's secretary faxed mine in, I watched her do it. I get checked a year later by the DOT. get shut down. I was able to email my medical card tothe state and have it reinstated within 30 min.

 

Everything about this is wrong. It's ALWAYS been the responsibility of the driver to certify.

I'm not trying to be negative- I feel for you in this situation and hopefully it all works out smoothly and quickly for you. But any new driver reading this thread needs to understand that it's our responsibility to self certify every time we're issued a new medical card
