Can someone tell me the 2016 IRS "per diem" daily rate and make it clear if you are stating the 100% amount or the 80% amount. If you know both 100 & 80% number please tell me.

At 100% was 63$ for a full day from Jan1st to Oct1st, 31.50 for partial days, haven't read anything that says they raised the rate for 2017-2018.
I've heard rumors that some of the tax programs are still only showing 59$, but that might have been my accountant trying to drum up additional customers.tscottme Thanks this. -
It's $63 and OTR drivers can claim 80% of that per day that you are away from home. Scroll down to "Transportation Industry" in the link below.

So filing taxes for Jan 1, 2016 to Dec 31, 2016 one would use the above 2016 rate for days after Oct 1, 2016 and the 2015 rate for days before Oct 1, 2016. If that's correct what was the 2015 rate?
Thanks for both of you clearly answering the question. -
The new rate went into effect Oct 1 of 2015. All of 2016 is at the new rate.

That $63 number sounds very familiar. I know they dropped it a few years ago, don't want them boys keeping too much of their money, but I also think it varies by state.

Doesn't matter what state you're in, it's a federal deduction for federal taxes. State of residence never applies to federal taxes.

The IRS has a special section for "Transportation workers" like truck drivers. If you are a businessman going to various cities on occasion they have a rate that applies everywhere, plus specific rates for high-cost cites. For transportation workers you can use the one rate for continental USA.

I agree... search
Here is the pub you need.
Note - in the past you normally took 80% of the standard daily rate for full days. But, I have been unable to verify this in pub 463 which is the most current IRS Pub.
Partial days are 75% of the standard daily rate. Some will say that you take 75% of the 80%, but the pub clearly states that you take 75% of the standard daily rate.
And $63 is the 2016 rate, $68 for outside the US.

If you disagree, then show a current pub or form so that this can be cleared up. Do not just say it is.. I called the IRS and after 45 minutes talking to the agent, she agrees, that this is the only pub that she can find that covers transportation workers.Attached Files:
