Hello drivers,
I've reached that point where I'm wanting to look for another driving job. Been with my current employer for nearly 2.5 years and I'm starting to feel like I don't fit here anymore. Made this decision back in November that I'd start trying to apply for some companies in the spring time.
I have some vacation planned with my current employer that I'll be taking around the beginning of April for a family trip, but I want to get the ball rolling as soon as possible for any potential applications. What's the earliest that you would recommend sending out applications? I'm trying to stay with this company until I can cash in that vacation, but I don't want to stay around any longer than I have to.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

If you leave before taking your vacation, would the company cash it out?

it is never too soon just be sure the possible new employer understands your possible start date [ following your vacation] then also let them know it is not OK to contact your current employer unless there is a firm job offer on the table YOU MUST BE CLEAR ON NOT CONTACTING CURRENT EMPLOYER your possible new employer will have to confirm your employment history before you start but they should be able to tender an offer based on application being verified

I think it is a good isea to make a list of what is important to you for your next company. A non negotiations column, a not so important column, for example.
I made a spreadsheet so I could fill in answers to compare companies.
Now, if you contact thirty companies you'll make yourself bonkers trying compare. So try to get a core group you want to contact. -
Find out why you are not happy. And then work on a path to fix it.
You did not state specifically what the problem is. Bad dispatcher? Problem shipper/reciever? etc. The reason I take this position is that you are almost three years in with your current company. Something in there must have gone bad like a bad apple left in the barrel too long. Don't throw away two and half years based on a vague something is bad feeling.
IF you know what the issue is and don't mind sharing with the group here, let's hear it. I have some other thoughts as well but first things first. -

Special jobs open up in different season so choice what you wanna do. Flatbed work hauling construction pick up around good weather, mail haulers pickup around fall, etc etc. Some companies don't hired all the time.
Do what you like best and work from there. Once you submit applications, your phone will start ringing.Truemac Thanks this. -
Thank you all for your responses. Allow me to clear up some things.
I'm not entirely unhappy with my job. I just feel it's time to move on. The company I'm currently with is the one I started with to earn my CDL (I won't name them here, but it's easy to figure out if you look at my previous posts). When I first started, my original plan was to work my required year and move on. I found out about a dedicated account with the company that kept me regional, and I enjoyed it enough that I decided to stick around for a full 2-years. The pay was decent, and I felt that would open up some more doors and improve my work history record.
Recently, things have been changing on the operations side that have just been rubbing me the wrong way. I'm also tired of dealing with the consistently crabby receivers on our end, and I'd just like a little more freedom in how I do my job. Some of the decisions from the higher-ups just make things more difficult for me in the end. I understand there are issues like what I listed in any job, but every little bit counts. My decision to leave was a matter of "when," not "if."
I'm done with reefer freight. I know that I want to move into a position driving tanker (Bulk or liquid, either or), and I already have a ranked list as to where I want to work (Built from talking to other drivers and extensive reading on the forums here). I understand that I may have to do OTR for another year or so before going local, but that's fine with me.
Honestly, if I gritted my teeth, I could probably wait until after my vacation time to start hardcore applying for another job, but having one lined up for when I return would be the ideal situation. -
That app is then shared with a lot of trucking companies, Within a few days you will get a whole bunch of calls and emails from perspective employers.
I was with a company for 12 years out of Montana. When the new owner took over I decided it was time to move on.
I filled out the online app, and within three days, I had over 25 offers. Then it became a matter of just choosing who I wanted to investigate and eventually go to.
I wish you the best, By the way, have a good vacation with the family.Truemac Thanks this.
