My instructors taught us to drive as the state requires it, then they taught us how to drive "Real World". So we learned how to actually drive after learning how to test per state requirements. How often do bureaucrats consider, or even recognize reality, anyhow?Pumpkin Oval Head Thanks this.

I don't think it is a DOT Reg, but had heard the same thing. I think most DMV Handbooks tell you that during the road test both hands must remain on the steering wheel while turning. If that is the case, then shifting requires you to remove one of you hands from the steering wheel while in a turn, which can fail you.

Just like pretty much any job

Yes, it may be a state dependent regulation, rather than DOT.

4th in an 18 speed is the same as 2nd gear in a 10 speed, so that would be fine. But he is driving a 10 speed I believe.

Yep. This is the way you are s'posed to do it, pilgrim, but this way is how you do it right

TROOPER to TRUCKER and Pumpkin Oval Head Thank this. -
Congrats!
Give it a year, come out relatively clean (you'll F-up, that's a given, isn't but the SUPER-DUPER-TRUCKER few of us that never have) and you'll have doors open that will (hopefully) benefit and satisfy the lifestyle you want to lead.
Luck, fellow.
And take off empty in 4th - you'll get it.
Lol.
Velli and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this.
