Bobtailing or empty is a different story. Start in 3rd 13 speed, 4th 10 speed. Wind it to 1,500, then skip to 5th or 6th. 13 speed I'll straight stick and then split 8the, 10 speed just go through the gears in a 10 speed. Empty with a trailer, start in 2nd in 13 and 3rd 10 speed, and just go through the gears, splitting 8th in 12 speed.

LO gear VS Victoria's Secret.
Ohh wait, it wasn't just LO gear, it was LO gear bobtail. I suppose that trumps Victoria's Secret for click bait.
What a troll.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
low gear here. its rare ill start higher, mabye empty or bobtail but even then ill normally start in lo or 1st and skip up from there.

Low then work your way up the tree.
Bucking trucks only show poor drivers.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Originally the video was a response to a question from a driver on this board from a couple years ago.
I was trying to extoll the virtues of using LO gear, so many drivers claiming to take off in 2nd 3rd and 4th all the time might as well get themselves an automatic truck since they are too lazy to go through the gears as the engineers designed the transmissions. -
Seems some of the replies note LO and first as being two different things unless I'm reading that incorrectly. On the 10 speeds I've driven, I start in first if on an uphill incline or if I'm heavy. If trying to get up to speed quickly(instead of skipping a gear), I'll use the clutch to take it out of gear and float it into the next gear. That helps shift quicker. For the ones that don't care because it's someone else's truck...the lurching is actually the clutch slipping and grabbing, so keep that in mind when you're in the shop for a new clutch.

Fwiw, the auto I drive always starts in 2nd. If I try to put it in first it fights me.x1Heavy Thanks this.

Also that LO is your final uphill gear when it's steep enough, say 24% your rig is moving slower than you can walk, hopefully above torque but not wound out so you keep your pyro cool and everything else in thermal order. Remember the hotter you get, the engine oil takes the loss first before it gets into your coolant temperature etc. when thought of in high temperature, high stress situations. If for some reason you did not manage the power and disclipine upgrade that steep you stand to stall out and face a lethal situation potentially.
Automatics have really made a hash of the professional driver, turning all of those who use it (Myself included). Into a sort of a brain dead automaton just put the foot down and go. Who cares about the gears anymore?
I still care.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Mine starts in 1st if I'm loaded, 2nd or 3rd if empty.

i have been in situations where low wasn't low enough. climbing a steep off road grade at 100k+ maybe even some soft soil in the mix, iv had to be pushed up grades by a d-9
whats really fun is when you come up the base of a steep grade in 3-4 get 3/4 of the way up and start to power out. then you have to hopfully grab low without stopping or ripping your drive line out. and if you miss the shift its backwards all the way back down if theres nothing around to push you the rest of the way up.
