Had that happen to an old FLD Freighiner with a Detroit. (We're talking late 90's model). It ended up being caused by.....me, or something I did. Years ago we'd unplug the big wire harness going from the Qualcomm to the ECM because the Qualcomm was the only thing with gps tracking back then. So, if we wanted to run a little outlaw miles, we couldn't be tracked. When they upgraded to new equipment, the new ecm's freaked out when you did this and started rolling the speedo and odometer as if you were driving at 1000 rpm's (that's what we use to idle our trucks at when we were on our rest breaks)

Ferris Bueller jacking the back of your truck up in the parking lot?

I checked it last night in 6 hours of being shut off it registered 23 more miles . The trip meter and hour meter stayed the same. The truck has had the ELD and whatever the company before I bought it had on removed.
