On this pre/post trip inspection thing. We were eating lunch with a Florida DOT officer one day and asked him about this. He went back to his vehicle and did a little research in it and came back with some papers and told us he couldn't find anything on when the inspection done and as long as it was logged on duty sometime during your duty day. He said he just looked to make sure that it was done at some point.

If you read the green book it states a driver must do a pre trip to satisfy himself that the truck is in safe operating condition. It doesnt state how long that may take, so like most things its open to interpretation. If i thoroughly go over the truck and trailer at night, and no one else is driving it, its going to be good to go the next morning but still like to do a walk around to catch anything i may have missed the night before such as a slow leak in a tire.
Also in our drivers manual (that blue binder they give you at orientation no one ever reads) it states mercer wants to see a 15 minute post trip. And since they are my customer they get what they want. -
That's it in a nutshell. Except for the six states I mentioned above. CA is strict on it if your day started in CA. I have heard that AZ has been known to nail you if you start in AZ or CA. I have had PA question me about it once but my day had started in another state so they couldn't do much but state if I had started in PA I would be in violation. I have never heard or had anything about the other three and you have to read the state regs to find any info on it. Most people that I know that run west at all worry about CA as they enforce it the most.
The green book can be vague and it does not cover state regs. But in general flagging a pretrip and doing a post trip satisfies most agencies.RStewart Thanks this. -
This is one of them topics where if you ask 10 different drivers, you're going to get 20 different answers.
