im getting a new reefer soon and i have always pulled tandem, i know nothing about spread axles but i found one i like its a 53" sliding rear axle spread and i will be pulling this trailer with my pete 389 with 275 wb. I go from cali to midwest. What do i need to know and look for in specs? Ill post the specs of the trailer im lookin at right now and please help me out if its cali legal/ right set up with my truck.

California Kingpin to rear axle must be around 41 feet at most. I need to check that law again too. Ive hauled both reefer spread and 48 foot 10 foot ravens spread which was not a problem.
Your california kingpin measures to the hub of your rear most axle. Which probably means that everything back there has to be slid forward until your rear trailer axle is within that distance for California.Black389 Thanks this. -
Is it a fixed 10'1" spread and the entire spread slides but always maintains the same spread or are the axles independent?
Because you want a 53' you still must have maximum 40' kingpin to center of rear axle... which would be all kinds of screwed up with 10' in front of that sits your first trailer axle...

On top of all that you would still be required to have side skirts or undertray system if you care to appease CARB... -
Only rear spread slids it also said it cali legal on the utilitys site. The Location of the kingpin said its 36"

So the front axle is fixed and the rear axle can slide forward to effectively close the spread.. or slide backwards to enable 10'1"

Ok so the way I see it the spread will have to be closed when operating in California to comply with 40' kpra rule. The spread would only be usable outside of California. And with a fixed front axle you likely lose out on the few remaining adjustment holes available to stay under 40' but may need to shorten a little more if you have a heavy load and need 34k on rear tandem...
Based in California and running there to midwest and back I don't see much use for this particular trailer.. -
