I can run them over my front axle but not the rear
I pulled a trailer for awhile that standard winches would clear -
All depends on tire size and clearance from rubber to winch.
My 24.5's. Rub against my winches due to tire and space. So I never run them by the tires.Al. Roper, DDlighttruck, cke and 1 other person Thank this. -
Fixed are better. Less flexibility, but less hassle. I wouldn't run a winch over a tire regardless of clearance mind you.

I dunno I always prefer sliding winches myself. Sometimes you want or need a strap right in this or that exact spot...
I remember trying to strap down a load of super sacks of some powder or another, the pallets weren't 48 inches exactly, I think they were 42 inch pallets with a little extra space where the sack bulged out but it worked out to less than 48 inches, and where some of the straps went nicely over the center of the sacks, at another point in the load the straps were in spots that it would just slide off of the sack one way or another.
Also sometimes I get loads where I prefer to use more straps in a concentrated area than the fixed trailers have. I guess it depends on what you haul, but I love sliding winches. -
Locked winches work for specific load application.
Sliding winches work for variable loads.bulldawg trucker, Slowpoke KW, Ruthless and 1 other person Thank this. -
I was talking about over axles. We have a lot of trailers spec'd that way. Fixed over tires, mobile everywhere else.
