Marten Transport is taking over some Walmart DC's. They bumped Prime out of Shelbyville,TN and took over that one, is one example.

Swift, Knight, US Express are all pulling Walmart trailers.

Timely manner? Say what you want about these outfits, but they wouldn't be in business if they didn't have HIGH ontime pickup and delivery numbers.

You may or may not be right as far as Walmart still getting sued (I wouldn't doubt it knowing our legal system), but the other things I mentioned are spot on.

No way it's cheaper to pull their own freight. Benefits alone cost corporations a fortune.

The drivers' stock doesn't amount to a drop in the bucket.

I noticed Wal-Mart trailers on a train out west this week, is this something new they are doing or has this been going on? I did local container work in Chicago and never once saw a Wal-Mart trailer at any Rail yard.

You can think whatever you want, but contract carriers actually cost Walmart more money than the Private Fleet. They do make sense for most refer loads as those require specialized trailers. Even then, WM has been getting tired of the expense of damaged loads and non timely deliveries. Walmart Transportation LLC is its own division of WM and has it's own set of books. It is always profitable. WM has been trying to keep down the number of contract carriers due to the extra cost (they fill in when busy as WM will only keep as many drivers as they can keep busy). Remember that the Private Fleet is one of the safest fleets in the country. This saves WM a lot of money.

Target manages to do that...just own trls..contract carrier pulls tells and target pays carrier to maintain

I can say from experience...majority of damaged grocery loads are caused by Wal-Mart themselves...with highly ignorant loading of goods in trl...I pulled dedicated and 2 loads a day and every load had damages...like loading pallets of yogurt on top of eggs....pallets of soda on top of paper towels...even asset protection at the dc had told me that they're instructed to load by how a computer says...Wal-Mart is the culprit

Surely you're not comparing target's operation to Wal-Mart's.
