I will add, the safety department didn't specify clear or duct tape. They just say No Tape...

I agree, the regs state the placard has to be so many millimeters across and so many inches apart from the next placard etc. Even clear tape could be interpreted as obstructing view or minimizing the actual size of the placard like those clear license plate shields which distort the plate numbers/letters. I was put out of service for improper placard 3 years ago, the piece of placard was only about 1 inch by in inch, officer said it was improper placard display and not applicable to my load.
All you have to do is find the right nit picky officer to put you out of service for using tape on your placards and no way to fight it under CSA since it (the data q) goes directly back to the same officer who wrote it up. -
We use these things. They will scratch the paint if not careful, but they work quickly.
