I was at System Transport for 3.5 years. I started out as a company driver and saved every dollar I could as I was determined to go o/o. After 2.5 years I've bought my truck from them and leased onto them.
They only have certain customers and won't look for loads and partials to get you better rate. If they have a stupid Genie/man lift that weighs ~35,000 lb and it will be on step-deck and you'll have 10ft upper deck and another 6-8ft behind manlift on lower deck-they won't find partials to get you better rate. Its take it or leave it deal.
They charge 10% of each load just for the trailer. I ran hard and averaged paying them $1300/month just for the trailer. I just couldn't afford to buy my trailer at the time. If you lease onto System bring your own trailer as its just too much of money lost just for trailer rental and most of their trailers are junk, lights not working, tires are bald (they only run recaps) if for some reason you got a trailer with 2 new tires its cause there was blowout and road service replaced with 2 new tires.
Preplanning loads at System is nonexistent. If you pick up one of their loads from Spokane and head over to MO or KS for example, you will most likely sit after you're empty from several hours to a day.
Deadhead is what will hurt you as they might offer you load that picks up 200-300 miles away. They don't look for loads on loadboards and you're stuck with their regular customers.
I wouldn't recommend them for owner/operators. They expect you to work for pennies here.

Isn't the main concern for companies like system to take care of their customers first?
Lonesome Thanks this. -
Possibly but they have to keep their o/o busy as well. They literally have dozens of loads sitting at the yard cause they pay so low, otherwise other companies would grab them.
And for the record I've always picked up/delivered on time and have 100% service. -
So they actually charge am additional 10% of each load for trailer rentals
-
Company I went to lease onto now charges 10% for dispatch service and they actually have dispatchers looking for loads for YOU as an owner operator cause the more expensive loads the more $$ myself and my dispatch will make, its a win win situation. -
If they never searched for partials to increase revenue to THEIR truck; what makes you think they'd do it for YOUR truck?
The "trailer rental" should have been discussed and agreed to BEFORE your surprise on the first check.
And the rest of the stuff you talked about should have, and could have been learned in 2 1/2 years as well.Roberts450, MachoCyclone, Lonesome and 2 others Thank this. -

That was always the biggest problem as a company driver with them. Sit for hours waiting for a new load sometimes.

Small local company that has ~20 trucks.
