Some of these GPS will take you the wrong way case in point, today in zepherhil FL going to get a load of water as we all know water lol, any way my rmn want me to go on a street that say plain as day no truck, if I was a sleep like most of us are, then I would head down the street and get a nice ticket, so them gps is not but they do help when they work right
csmith1281 Thanks this. -
In a nutshell ignore GPS when it tries to take you through downtown,. Always take the loop.
Even if it's allowed, like Indy, it tends to be faster and at least a lot less stressful to go around.
Then there is St. Louis. Only a fool would willing drive say 70 and go through downtown area. Or even 70 to 44.
Most any city that restricts local delivery will have ample warning. If they do not, well, it is an STAA route, so....snowwy and csmith1281 Thank this. -
You can go through Indy. However, seems there is a rollover a week in the sharp turns.

Ok......So If I Need I-44 west or I-64 West- I Should go down I255 to catch 44 in missouri- Or Take I-270 to catch i-64??
No Way.....255 adds 13 miles- 270 adds like 12
Only in rush hours I'll Bypass I-
55 to the spaghetti bowl to catch 44 west
My experience...I Like driving THRU the Cities If its not a Force Bypass
Same with Minneapolis-st Pauli girl- THRU both on 94- No 494-694
New Yotk City..Same thing- Gimme GW Bridge to Cross Bronx up to CT...You can take that I-84 And its Pulls and open CT weigh station and shove it....The Megas WANT their Drivers going that way.
I Love Detroit..I Truly do- I Go I-94 to I-75...I Like driving Thru exits like Lonyo or Cecil Ave....
See, OIlder Guys like us Respect what the inner cities have brought us over the years- Before Bypasses, We had to run through every city Big and Small..
My Hometown Chicago, (which Im very proud of) I rarely use I-294...294 is for the "Scared" or the Mega Fleet... Their Drivers are consistently routed I-294, Welp, Spend the Money.csmith1281 Thanks this. -
this old guy,(30+ out here) ,will bypass a major city, in heart beat. really don't like cities much, anyway.
sealevel Thanks this. -
You'll have to find out when you get there,

Most of the places I have run into that don't want through trucks is small towns. And they usually just have some tiny signage Just before the "detour".
GPS can't even get close to keeping up with them, just be alert. -
I don't worry about GPS on your end.
But let's use Atlanta as a example. You have to run the outer ring bypass. You do not ever take a big truck downtown Atlanta. UNLESS you have and can prove beyond a doubt that you have a delivery address within the Atlanta Core in your bills of lading etc.
If you are hazmat generally you will be bypassing on posted hazmat routes.
GPS is nice. but your brain is the king. Use your judgement versus a city. If signs tell you not to take a truck in such as Atlanta, do not do it unless you again have a delievery to a particular address downtown and can prove it with the BOL.
Other than that, I don't know how many cities Ive gotten into with a big truck. And some of them are probably more than happy to see me gone.csmith1281 Thanks this. -
I haul HazMat and consult the National HazMat Registry for routes. There are REMARKABLY FEW restrictions in most states. TN, has 1. HM must use 640 around Knoxville. You can drive through all the other cities, legally. Non-HM, has less restrictions. I don't know where to find the restrictions other than Atlas, GPS, or road signs.csmith1281 Thanks this.
