I found out today I'm not eligible for the WIOA grant because I make too much, working 40 hours a week at just $12/hr. Lol. Anyways, we are tight on money and I'm going over different options to get in the trucking world, so I need yalls advice on what may be best to get better teaching and in the long run, experience while learning. I'm going to call the local community college tomorrow since they offer cdl classes, and I can apply for a Sallie Mae loan. That starts February 3rd -__-
My other option is of course paid company cdl training. The downside is not being paid until the 3rd week. Which would be pretty rough for the boyfriend at home. I've looked at Wil-Trans, Roehl, Prime, Millis Transfer, and Maverick. I realize you have to stay for 1 year. And, I'm really not wanting to go dry van or reefer, but I will do what needs to be done in the end.
I plan to get my hazmat and tanker endorsements, and the TWIC ID card. I really want to start in tanker or dry bulk. If you're tight on money but really want to get in, what would be the best route? Going to the school won't have me graduating until end of March (weekend classes). Which really, really sucks.

Be patient and attend the community college, then hire on with a tanker company.
Is the boyfriend going to ride along once you hit the road? -
I was hoping you'd chime in lmao. No, I already asked him and he's not even remotely interested. This is one of things I can't force him to do, otherwise he'd be miserable 24/7

You can fib a little and hit the credit union for a few bucks to tide you over while in school full time or with a trucking company cdl school. I used to do that when I was poor and struggling. Would blow the money on beer and chasing women.
Contact those tanker outfits and make sure they'll hire you; maybe ask for a pre-hire letter to show the school.
Wil-Trans, Roehl, Prime, Millis Transfer, are ok for trucking company schools, but I'd also look at Contract Freighters Inc (CFI).
CFI is proud to support female truck drivers.
One of our very own female drivers, Stephanie Klang, was named as an ATA’s America’s Road Team Captain. Stephanie surpassed an incredible milestone of driving over three million safe miles!Last edited: Dec 4, 2017
Gin86 Thanks this. -
For some reason I don't doubt that beginning part lol. I've thought about adding CFI to my list, but don't they run around NY and such?
-
They do a lot of western states; real good, long runs.
@RoadRooster works there and can fill you in on the details. I don't know if New York City is forced or not, but he will know. The Tiny Bee, RoadRooster and Gin86 Thank this. -
@Gin86 we do all 48 plus Canada. I been to Long island twice, Queens once, the rest of new England and Canada 3 or 4 times each over 7 years. Most is between I-77 and I 25

I spoke with a CFI recruiter yesterday. They sound like a pretty good place to start, the trainer rides shotgun and trains you...
RoadRooster, Gin86 and Chinatown Thank this. -

New York in a big truck scares me honestly lol. No way Jose about Queens in that thing. I've been wondering with dry van and reefers, how are you supposed to keep on time for the next haul and take your 10 hour breaks when the shippers/receivers seem to hold you hostage?RoadRooster Thanks this.
