Honestly a ride along is not going to shed much light on the daily/nightly tasks you perform as an OTR driver. I just finished my first year of OTR and really it was nothing like I expected it to be. Prior to driving a truck I was in the Army and when I finished my tour I went to work for the federal government. I retired from federal service after 25 years got my cdl and went OTR . I found the job to be very stressful and as hard and dangerous as anything I have ever done. I'm not trying to scare you off but driving a semi truck is not a nine to five job by any means.

Really just jump in and see if you like it. If its not for you move on to something else. My first year was rough but I got through. Now I have a local driving job with a new set of skills to learn and I miss OTR. Go figure.

 

You could always jump behind the cab and climb under the fairing above the sleeper. You'll have your ride along that way. Better pack some warm clothes this time of year though.

 

No. this idea is a commonly held mistaken assumption among people outside of the industry. Unless you have a relative or friend who is a truck driver, and his company or insurance allows your to ride along, it's not possible. It's a bit like hoping the hospital will allow you to watch an operation from inside the operating room. If anything bad happens the consequences are huge.

 

Also you will sign a form for that relative etc in which YOU assume all liability, such as hospital trauma bills should something happen and that person gets hurt. A friend of mine took a full tour in Trauma for 8 days and his medical billing came in at a cool 100,000 dollars.

 

Keep in mind can be a grueling grind

Even with YouTube now it is still very difficult to know what thus job is like until you start doing it. Nothing in movies, tv, or media gives a full picture of the job. They either make up some stupid story or they are pushing their agenda. I think there is a documentary on YouTube called Big Rig. It might be on Netflix. It is ok.
