Agreed but there are thousands of company trucks out here with zero tire chain storage means where the driver was issued 4 or 5 bags of chains and a hardy "good luck!"
These guys need some sort of reasonable solutions once they actually use them. Using chain bags is helpful but ideally only one chain per bag so if you ever get an opportunity to collect some discarded chain bags, pick them up.Dave_in_AZ and Toomanybikes Thank this. -
Another option some drivers implement is the "single-use method" ...
- put 'em on
- get to the top
- Achieve maximum fleet speed on the downhill side until such time as all chains are shed
- request money for new chains at the appropriate future time
- repeat.

I keep them in my headache rack like all good flatbedders.
Oh, those kinda chains. I don't go anywhere near the Rockies so I don't Carry that kind of chain.
lol I've never seen a semi with tire chains on the road in the Midwest?HalpinUout Thanks this. -
Use one of these or put them on trailer, have someone fabricate chain hooks on the trailer.

The last time i went OTR, i laid out the chains on the catwalk and secured them with 3/8" bolts with large diameter fender type washers. Never had a problem with DOT folks.
Not saying YOU should do this, i'm just saying what i did and what worked for me. -
...and new fenders and new airpots and slack adjusters, and new brake lines, and new tires, some new wheels, and maybe a cutting torch to get the wrapped-around chains off of the axle...better still just buy and install new axles and rear end housings, and don't forget the fine for the ticket you got when a broken piece of chain went flying through the windshield of the snow plow
.And the tow truck and the mobile mechanic, and a get well card when your dispatcher has a nervous breakdown, and...and...and...
Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
Iron range guys in northern mn all have them. But no you don’t need them on the interstate.
I’ve needed them a few times but we’re talking twice a year and I can always get by.
