What you say is true to a point, I was over there when there was an East and West Germany and went to a few places that they had open to the east. I saw a lot of rather fat East Germans that didn't seem to have issues with obtaining high caloric food.

We only had the ration system until I think through much of the war, not the entire war. BUT the Brits had it from I think from the beginning of the war all the way through 1954, at first it was just gas, then bacon, butter and sugar and so on. Everything was rationed. AND it continued into the 50's This had a serious effect on the health of the nation, leading to health problems for all into the 60's. I remember talking to people who lived through the first war rationing, they said that was bad enough but when the second war came, it was horrible but made the best of it. I also remember that my uncle used to send food parcels to some family in London who he stayed with during the war. I met the daughter and her husband at his funeral and they said that he saved their lives with that food, they could not survive on what they could get.

I remember when I was visiting with my partner just over a year ago, the malls there have a lot of American chain restaurants, as well as some ex-pat owned places that serve American style food(there’s even a buffalo wing place own by a couple guys from, well, Buffalo). The last night we were together staying in Manila for my flight home the next morning we found a Chili’s. Same exact menu and food they have over here in the states except the prices and service were a lot better there. (You’d be surprised at how much American culture is over there. In fact the still practice a lot of manners people forgot here like actual POLITENESS.) I was about to order a big steak, when she suggested a big combo meal for the both of us (“hon, this is better, then steak is too much”, she’s VERY strict about being frugal). I agreed since it looked like it was a lot of food— a full rack of ribs, double serving of fries, appetizers, etc. 10 bucks all told. To her it was still expensive. I told her a regular steak dinner here in the states was about 20 dollars, the shocked look on her face was priceless.

Another time I was there she and her friends decided to have a big blow out for my birthday. Rented a nice cabin at a local water park resort, brought lots of food which she, her mom and her friends made. Let’s just say I was pretty stuffed. The interesting thing was when we went shopping for the supplies. We all pooled money together, and gathered up a HUGE shopping cart full of stuff. Keep in mind the stores there sell the same exact brands as over here.. Libby’s, Tyson, etc. if we were at a Walmart here in the states the bill wouldve been close to 250 dollars. I looked at the receipt and it was about 2500 peso....$50 US. Shows how much the corporates at ripping us off here in ‘merica.
