This is UN TRUE.
Most western states require you to carry chains at certain times of the year. NOT YEARROUND.
It varies from state to state. Some req. Sept thru May. otheres Oct to April. Please check with each state your going to travel in, for thier specific rules.LawDawg Thanks this. -
They do treat dogs better. If you don't have an animal in your truck you get a fine for letting your truck idle. Heaven forbid any animal should be cold or hot but the heck with a human. Let em cook or freeze and then fine em.

You are paid to trow iron. What did you think that the mileage pay rate you get was for, just a drive in the sun? LOL
Yea theres a great excuse "I don't know how"Spoken like a true SE trucker. No one in the NW thinks they are a super trucker because they put on chains to get around. We just do it so we won't get stuck and when it is safer then driving without them. Not to mention that OR has required the use of chains for like the last week. Gonna sit for a week on the side of the road?
I find it strange that that you have all these truckers who think nothing of driving 10 mph over the speed limit in the rain and Fog suddenly think you are a super trucker or unsafe to chain up and drive 25 or 30 mphs. C'mon now you are just to lazy to get out of the bunk and into the cold and chain up and would rather tool around at the truck stop and ##### about no freight and bad checks while the people who get er done can't keep up with the work and are begging for a break.Last edited: Dec 24, 2008
MO family man, LawDawg and biggare1980 Thank this. -
Well put Blue. I laugh at the schmucks that refuse to chain up and would rather sit. Sure most companies pay snow pay after 24 but a man can make a heck of a lot more to chain up and run.

Ha Ha Ha. I have chains on my truck but I'll be ###### Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Arkansas and Tennessee don't require them. I wish they hung outside instead of taking up space in my sidebox. I'd throw em a few times to get them all dirty and rusted up though. I'd feel like a homeowner that WD-40'd his shovels otherwise.

I will try and defend the opposite side here, its getting lopsided. lol
You can chain up and continue to drive BUT you could get hit by a 4 wheeler or inexperienced trucker which could result in you losing your job or even career. Then you would be thinking to yourself, I should have waited it out. Its always that other person that screws it up, its gonna happen sooner or later. I personaly say: If your not comfortable in driving in winter driving conditions then wait. I dont like driving in snow alongside others who are shaking, they could easily screw things up for all of us. DRIVE SAFE -
I'd think about trowing a set of chains on for $80.00

Now I could be wrong here, but I'm guessing that all these "blanket statements" are being made by folks who generally drive in a specific area. Those that are saying they would never chain up, probably pretty much drive in snow free country, while those who say they always chain up probably drive mostly in country that has a lot of snow and ice.
My own feelings are that chains are to help you get out of trouble, rather than to get into it. If I can wait for a couple of hours, for the plows to clear the roadway, then fine. That is much better and safer than having to chain up, and get rolling.
OTOH, if I'm in an area, or in weather conditions where the plows are not going to make the difference between the need for chains, then you might as well chain up and go. What are you going to do. Sit at a truck stop, or rest area for a week or so, waiting for the weather to clear up?LawDawg Thanks this. -
Yea chaining sure does spark some debate. Only presidential elections seem to bring more heated conversation. I go anywhere I am dispatched but in eight years I have chained once, in the dark to drive five miles up and over a pass on I-80 to get to a truckstop for a good nights rest. I wasn't going to sleep in a chain up area with yahoos flying and sliding all over the place. Living in the south there isn't much chance I will have to chain very often but whatever needs to be done is what is going to be done. The only problem with Knight is when you do get to your destination your going to be waiting anyways for your next load in certain areas. So wait, go, whatever you want to do, it doesn't affect me unless your bringing me my load home.
