I’d say a picky inspector could say: The can needs to be DOT or OSHA approved metal can that is labeled diesel and secured with at least a bungee cord.

How would you get the can without breaking the seal?

You need more than 5 gallons, 10 should be good if you run out.

You do need to have a US DOT approved can with a guard. Plastic cans are not allowed in many states and you will be ticketed if they are in a bad mood.

Better to use at least a 1" strap. Nothing on my truck gets secured with a bungee, except for a tarp covering the load. Any commercially available yellow can will suffice for diesel fuel, and a 5 gallon can or two is well below any haz-mat threshold. As long as it is properly secured, you're fine.

If you're not running in remote areas, you should be fueling whenever your tanks get down to around 25% capacity.

Yeah, just remember, if you DO run out of fuel, you'll want at least 10 gallons. Until you're done priming the fuel system, and getting it running, you'll have already used probably three gallons.

I ran out early this year right across the street where I was going to fuel (my gauge shows empty with about 100 gallons left). I bought 5 and got it started and limped to the pumps. Any further than that, 5 wouldn't have been enough.
