I'm trying to wrap my mind around the concept of unions getting stronger because someone kissed your ###.

According to the Legal Defense Foundation, right-to-work laws prohibit union security agreements, or agreements between employers and labor unions, that govern the extent to which an established union can require employees' membership, payment of union dues, or fees as a condition of employment, either before or after: You Pay, or you no work.

I have a Ryder story--
I had graduated Diesel Tech school, and was looking for my first mechanic job. Willing to relocate, willing to start at the bottom, I figured I'd have something before too long (It ended up taking 2.5 years for me to get a job in a shop.)
Anyway, I applied at Ryder. A recruiter called me to chat, we talked about what I was willing to do, where I was willing to relocate to, and where their biggest needs were. It ended with a phone interview being scheduled between me and a Ryder Manager in Shreveport LA who desperately needed a fuel island attendant. I had clarified time zones and double checked everything before ending the call. But when the scheduled interview time arrived, my phone never rang. I didn't have the direct number for the Shreveport Manager, so I called the recruiter. Got his voicemail. Left a message. Never heard from Ryder again.
They called me to schedule an interview, but never did the interview, nor did they ever have the courtesy to explain why. It's not the only time that happened on my 2.5 year job search (it happened shockingly often,) but it was the first. I couldn't believe any company would be that callous. -
Wargames and LoneCowboy Thank this.

Yep beliving they did do me a favor. The account appears to be falling appart other driver quit too. Although Ryder is now offering $6000 sign on bonus. Cant keep the two they had, but now willing to pay a price for a body i guess. What a joke.

I worked for Penske Logistics for several years. Got to know Ryder and how they operate, which is very similar.
IMHO the biggest reason for either to run supply chain divisions is to be a huge customer for the lease/rental business, the real bread and butter. And the moment any given supply chain customers operations are not paying their way, Penske and Ryder both will ditch the contract by not living up to the requirements, releasing them from a money losing deal.
Sometimes they swap customers, and improve the contract at the same time. Customers frequently lie to either one about details of the operation.
And of course if either run into labor issues i.e. attempted union organization they will dump the contract in a NY minute, which is half the reason companies hire them in the first place.Lepton1 Thanks this. -

So does anyone on here work for them? Just got offered a job through a recruiter. Grand a week guaranteed versus 40 a mile, whichever is greater. Day cabs, probably slip seating. Comments are welcome.
