I have just used a pipe or the pipe end of the winch bar for decades. Pipe needs to be 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter so it fits over the binder loosely. Just slip it on a couple of inches or so. When the binder releases it slips safely out of the pipe so the pipe stays safely in your hand.

When tightening put the bar on farther so it won’t slip off. It needs to slip off freely when loosening and stay on when tightening. Never put your face in line with where the recoil of the pipe or binder handle can hit you if it slips off.

I learned this the hard way over 40 years ago but never had a problem but that one time. I am a quick learner when pain is involved.

Take a ratchet binder and tighten the chain to release tension on the snap binder. Safely remove the snap binder and throw it in the garbage.

Use recoiless binders and you won't have to work as hard closing/opening them
