When I was at Magnum I said the same thing.... I’ll never go Auto.
My new job there was no choice. I’m in an Auto. And I hate to admit it.... but I’m really digging it. The thing pulls great on the hills, makes downgrades easy and a dream in traffic. Backing up has been fine too.... I don’t miss the clutch at all....
Most of our loads are less than 30,000lbs too... which makes a huge difference. But I’m through West Virginia a few times a week and it is so nice....
If I had to choose now, I would still pick a manual... but these Autos are really really nice too.Last edited: Jun 9, 2018
Zangief, WesternPlains, Lowlite and 3 others Thank this. -
Manual mode isn't disabled. I use it a lot.

Going forward Paul had discussed locking out manual to stop drivers from not using eco-cruise...on the 19’s it would be wise to check the details.Ray Strack and txtodd Thank this.

I know a lot of truckers prefer higher rpms if they have rev limiters because it can keep the revs from jumping if they get wheel spin. However, I feel going up keeping the rpms low, im less likely to encounter wheel spin at all.

disabling manual mode should be outlawed as a safety issue to prevent runaway ramp use decending long grades. Heck, on my Puppy truck, I keep it in Perf mode a lot of the times I am loaded.
decending grades with Jakes, you want it at a high rpm for maximum braking. The Maxxfarce Prostars I drove recommended 1900-2200 for decending long grades. -
Lower RPM’s in the modern engine means more torque which does equal more whe spin on slippery conditions especially if throttle is is held to the floor. Look at the torque band 1200-1300 is peak torque.Ray Strack, ncmickey and Winnyf1 Thank this.

Maybe I was misreading the situation then. When my rpms were higher I was encountering wheel spin, when I lowered my rpms I didnt. Maybe it was just that slight difference in speed. I just remember down shifting as I was losing speed, and then I had wheel spin 3 times and then just shifted back up and kept em low and I didnt anymore. Im still learning things.

Torque is delivered on modern engines via the ECM and can vary depending on the load, this is especially prevalent on the 18’s on...adding more throttle in lower gears brings on the potential for more torque so going higher (gear) can help

I don’t know anything about auto’s never driven one, but with a manual when you down shift it goes from zero torque to having when you depress the throttle which is where the chance of wheel spin is greatest. That’s why you ease back into the throttle.
